Growing up in Alameda Ca (USA) it was a very common sight seeing at least 1 , 2, or even 3 aircraft carriers docked at the NAS. Alameda was homeport to the Hornet. However, we'd be visited quite often by the Hancock, Coral Sea, Midway, The Big E (Enterprise), Oriskany, and even Ranger. In 1st photo it appears to be the Hornet, Coral Sea, and Enterprise docked picture taken in 1945.

2nd photo is of CV-12 Hornet in South China Sea circa 1954

Also of note in the 2nd photo are the F2H3 Banshee's with wings-up on the flight deck.

Did the weapon work? If so why was it not adopted by the rest of the fleet and sold to other navies?
Or......was it just a 1 off. It worked (only in the minds of the few)but it couldn't perform as advertised (lack of quality in the design)?

I'm leaning toward option 2.

Equipment ended up in the US after breakup of the USSR. So, go figure.

Gotcha! Sorry Lurker....It's a soviet spy vessel the Kapitan Man. The story goes:

[More than four years after a suspected Russian spy ship in U.S. waters fired a laser into the eye of a U.S. Navy intelligence officer, Navy bureaucrats continue to cover up for a Clinton administration whitewash of the affair. Meanwhile, the wounded officer, Lt. Cmdr. Jack Daly, suffers constantly from debilitating laser burns to his right eye - burns he sustained while photographing the spy ship for the Office of Naval Intelligence (ONI).

The incident occurred in April 1997 in the Strait of Juan de Fuca that separates Washington state from Canada. The ONI director personally had handpicked Daly to serve aboard a Canadian military helicopter tasked to monitor suspicious ships in the waterway. On his very first mission, Daly was instructed to photograph a Vladivostok-based freighter known as the Kapitan Man. The Navy considered the Kapitan Man a Russian spy ship. A Sea King helicopter, piloted by Canadian Air Force Capt. Patrick Barnes, left its base in Esquimalt with Daly aboard to fly close to the vessel and photograph its unusual antenna arrays.]

It was not a propaganda, in was it was a secret until recently.
50 MWt laser burned trough aircraft wings on a distance of 500 yards.
Ship named "Dixon". 1st laser weapon firing - 1980.

It worked as a 1st step, and I think that somebody need to do a 1st step, right?

My expertise might very well. However, this single event has had no real impact on the rest of the world. There's little if any information in regards to it. Sorry Lurker - Like most of your kind, the dreams and visions of some mighty and proud country come across to the rest of the world as awkward, done on the cheap, and insignificant at best.
Again, I ask what contributions has Russian made to the rest of the world?
Please..........Just name one?
