Also even in WW2 the title "Commodore" was a Positional Billet, not a rank. It is given to Floatilla, Squadron, and Air Groups. A senior Capt, to show the increased responsibility.
The Navy tried to introduce 1 Stars as Commodore Admirals back in the 80s. But response from the fleet was bad, so the rank stayed as RALH and the Billet Commodore. |

SOB! The Kearsarge (CVS-33). My favorite aircraft carrier. I worked on her as an Apprentice Shipfitter. I worked on her as a Shipfitter Journeyman. Spent a whole night aboard with the Swing shift replacing some main deck beams that got bent when she ran circles around a Ruskie sub in high seas.
After transferring to design I drew plans for some of her antenna foundations. When the hotel screwed up the Prom dates for my kid brother's high school prom, the XO arranged to have it held aboard ship. Sadly I had to design her towing bridle for decommissioning and taken to Bremerton. Then to rub salt in the wound, she was towed back down to Long Beach, moored to the South end of Pier Echo in plain site of the design building I was in and cut up for scrap.

Sorry, I went to Sea on the USS Kearsarge LHD3. Not the Aircraft Carrier, although I am sure she was a fine ship. |

And I believe they were the 1 star insignia and the single broad gold lace of a commodore, do they not?

I don't think so. The star designates Admiral (they usually leave of the bottom half part). Commodore is used when addressing them, or in task force related official correspondence. |

I was on the same cruise, although I ended up spending most of my time on the Ponce off the coast of Albania while the Kearsarge was off the West coast of Africa. Joined up with the ship about a week before she got to Palma (fun place ). Got off the ship in Palma and hopped a flight back to the states. |

if i could i would love to see a class of indian ssn's named after the famous snakes in indian mythology.they are eight
1.-sheshnag- the snake that has a thousand heads and carriies the world on its shoulders. 2.-vasuki- the great cobra that the gods used to churn the ocean of milk to get the elixir of immortality. 3.kaliya- though a villian and killed by lord krishna he symbolized poison to an extent that his very presence poisoned the waters he lived in. 4-manasadevi- the queen of the snakes. 5-ananta the endless snake that encircles the universe. 6-padmanabha-the guardian snake of south india. 7-astika- half brahmin and half cobra, saviour of the snakes. 8-nagastra- the snake weapon used by arjuna in the mahabharata war these snakes all symbolize stealth and power something the indian ssn should signify. ![]() |

Then I bet we bumped into each other more than once. I left the Kearsarge and flew to the med while the Spanish PhibEx was going on. Part of the HQ company detachment from BLT 1/2. Hung around for Albania and the PfP trip to Varna. Transfered back to the Kearsarge when she got back to the Med. Between the roaches on the mess deck and the meal worms they tried to serve us, I was more than happy to leave that boat. Spent most of my time in the 1stclass mess. |
