dundonrl,

USS Makin Island has been delayed. She was supposed to have arrived in 2008. But according to NG, "rework" had to be done.

They should have a commercial that says "We thank you for your tax money, a majority of it is being "reworked" into the budget and our pockets as we speak. Thank you for working hard so we don't have to."

Regarding Ship names, I've always liked the Brits - powerful sounding and worthy of a Capital Ship.

How about...

HMS Monarch
HMS Thunderer
HMS Conqueror
HMS Lion
HMS Tiger
HMS Victory
HMS Warrior

And my favorites...

HMS Warspite and HMS Revenge!

In todays pc atmosphere I'm amazed they haven't changed the name of HMS Excellent to HMS Barely Adequate.

Certainly seems a little premature, to say the least.

His point is, the DD(X) is a DDG, not a DD, and even if it were a DD it should be DD-998 not DD-1000, but more realistically should be DDG-113, although as he says it will probably be DDG-2000. He then goes off about the LCS, which violates historical perspective regarding L-class ships established in 1968 as Amphibious ships. He wants the LCS to be FFL, which is the traditional symbol for littoral frigate, while my bet is most surface officers would like the LCS turned into the FFG(X) and armed up (requirement creep enter stage left).

As for me, I try not to care about hulls and names, but it seems to me the system does need standards. After all, Independence was the name of an aircraft carrier that served for 39 years, 9 months, and 20 days, and no slouch either. She partisipated in not only the Cuban Missile Crisis, but also Vietnam, was on standby off Crete during the 1973 Yom Kippur war, supported peacekeeping in Lebanon in the 82 and 83, and between those deployments supported Operation Urgent Fury to liberate Grenada in 83, fought in Gulf War I in 90-91, and was the first line of defense when Operation Southern Watch took effect in 1992. Now they give the name to a LCS? What?

In my opinion, the US should have 15 names reserved for Aircraft Carriers alone:

USS Enterprise
USS Hornet
USS Lexington
USS Midway
USS Independence
USS Ranger
USS Langley
USS Yorktown
USS Saratoga
USS Forrestal
USS Oriskany
USS Wasp
USS Coral Sea
USS Leyte Gulf
USS Essex

This type of system would keep politics out of names for the most important ships, if you want to name a ship after a president, Senator, Congressman, Mayor, or City Council member, use the LCS for that.
Lets not forget #16, Shangri-La, often synonimised with the Dolittle raid and the mythical airfeild on "Shangri-La".

I am also disappointed in the Navy throwing away the standards of Navy ships. I just can't see this new class of Landing ships (Wasp class LHD) being named after Attack Carriers of historical importance. The previous class of LHA's were named after notable Marine battles such as Tarawa, Saipan, Belleau Wood and Pelilieu. Their replacement class should have carried on the same tradition.

Submarines used to be named after ocean creaturs, primarily fish and even the first nuclear submarine was named after the Nautilus. Now they're nameing them after historical figures or cities and the big boomer class (carrying D-5 Tridents) are named after States.

Admittedly the Ohio class submarines perhaps carry the most destructive power of all with enough missiles to wipe out a medium sized country. So I have to admit that crewmen would not like to admit manning a submarine named USS Sperm Whale.

Rusty, I've been puzzled as well. Will names like Hornet, Enterprise, Saratoga, or Independence ever be used for carriers again? Also, why has the navy insisted on calling the new DD-1000 a destroyer? It displaced what, 14,000 tons - if not more. Seems cruiser size to me.

As for our Boomers, I guess it's reasonable to name them after states. They are our most powerful platform, in terms of shear destructive potential - just like the BB's were before the carriers surpassed them.

There are too many people working for the Navy back in D.C. that are too young to remember history and (most of all) tradition.

Usually when a Battleship Captain or a Carrier Captain got promoted it was to Rear Admiral. Rear Admiral rates TWO stars. But during the 80's there were so many eligible Captains that they decided to give a ONE star Admiral rating.

BUT, they named it Rear Admiral BOTTOM END.

My boss and I just couldn't believe they were that dumb. There used to be a ONE star rating up until the end of WW II. But it wasn't called Rear Admiral Bottom End. It was called COMMODORE.

A much better sounding title.

And one with history and tradition behind it. Fortunately it's still in use with the Royal Navy.

Commodore is still used in the US Navy as well. It denotes a captain/06 in charge of a group of ships. My last posting in the Navy was with Amphibious Squadron Four out of Little Creek Virginia. Went to sea on the USS Kearsarge with the USS Ponce and another ship that escapes my memory. Our 06 was called Commodore. But its not a paygrade title though.

BTW, its not Rear Admiral bottom end, its Rear Admiral Lower Half. That sounds a little bit better.
