Personally, I have always felt that the U.S. and U.K. have always had the absolute best capital ship names. The use of state names has alwasys seemed powerful to me. The British have a far broader range of names to choose from but names such as Furious, Indominable, Invincible, King George, etc. do sound very powerful. Despite the fact that I served on a submarine named after a state, I still think it inappropriate for subs to be named for states or cities. I know many submariners that regret that they cannot serve on submarines whose namesakes have such illustrious war records, i.e. Skate, Lionfish, Nautilus, Stingray, so on and so forth.

And as several others have pointed out, there were several periods when Churchill was about as popular as mud, and he made some impressively foolish decisions. But he was right about the big ones, so we like him.

![]() Jr dont need any ship named after him. His fathers legacy (CV) will last longer then both of them will remain alive. Churchill has a USN DDG named after him. I visited it and posted pics of her here in Philly. |

But still the names of RN are much better than those we get. We usually simply use names of or states, cities, or simetimes a famous person. Our subs dont even get names at all... |
