    « Little Darlin »with The Diamonds –
Two performances with 47 years in between !

    _____________________________________________

The Diamonds are a Canadian vocal quartet of the 1950s and early 1960s who rose to prominenceperforming mostly cover versions of songs by black musicians.
The original members were Dave Somerville (lead), Ted Kowalski (tenor), Phil Levitt (baritone) and Bill Reed (bass).
This band were most noted for representing for a music style of vocal based rhythm and blues(R&B) music, which developed in African-American communities in the 1940s and which achieved mainstream popularity in the 1950s and early 1960s.

I post here 2 videos about their well-known song « Little Darlin » performed in 1957 and 2004. You will see, these guys are amazing ! Their performance in 2004 was better than the original 47 years before !

« Imagine » by John Lennon / The Beatles
    __________________________________________________ _____

« Imagine » is a song written and performed by John Lennon. It was released as a single from his album Imagine in 1971, and was released as a single in the United Kingdom in 1975 in conjunction with the album Shaved Fish. It was inspired by a poem from his Japanese wife, Yoko Ono´s 1964 book Grapefruit.

The song received a Grammy Hall of Fame Award and is in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll; it was ranked the 3rd greatest song of all time by Rolling Stone in its « The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time ».

    Imagine

    Imagine there's no heaven
    It's easy if you try
    No hell below us
    Above us only sky
Imagine all the people living for today

    Imagine there's no countries
    It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
    And no religion too
Imagine all the people living life in peace

    You, you may say
I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one
I hope some day you'll join us
And the world will be as one

    Imagine no possessions
    I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
    A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people sharing all the world

    You, you may say
I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one
I hope some day you'll join us
And the world will live as one

I hope our world in …100 years from now (!) maybe better than our world in this century !

« Angel Baby » by Rosie & The Originals (1960)
    __________________________________________________ ____________

Rosie Mendez-Hamlin was 14-year old when she wrote the lyrics to « Angel Baby ». She put together a vocal group and had the song recorded. It was released in December 1960 and became a hit.

It´s a beautiful song which is sung by a beautiful gird with a lovely voice.

Everytime I hear this song, it makes me so sadly, because it reminds me of the dramatic ending of my first love at the end of the Vietnam War.
I was then 21 years old, second lieutenant, platoon commander of 8th airborne battalion. 4 times wounded. But too young to die. In the blackest moment of our country South Vietnam (April 1975) my girl friend wanted that I should go with her family to leave VN before the communists come. Her family fortunately belonged to 7-8000 « at risk » Vietnamese who should be airlifted out of Saigon together with American civilians during the Operation Frequent Wind. Run away at this moment ? No way. How could I still look into the faces of my soldiers ? Some young officers did it. But I could not. The day before she and I met last time. We heard together our song Angel Baby as the first time as we met. We had tears in our eyes…

Then the Operation Frequent Wind began.

From a defensive position of our battalion around Tan Son Nhat Airport, I looked up the night sky and saw the lights and noise of US Navy helicopters up and down in air space of Saigon….I thought, she and her family was somewhere in one of these helicopters. My Angel Baby was gone…I didn´t cry, but my heart was broken……

    It's just like heaven
    being here with you
    You're like an angel
    too good to be true
But after all, I love you, I do
    Angel Baby, my Angel Baby

When you are near me my heart skips a beat
    I can hardly stand on
    my own two feet
Because I love you, I love you, I do
    Angel Baby, my Angel Baby

Uh uh, I love you, uh I do
No one could love you like I do
Uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh,
    uh, uh, uh,

Please never leave me blue and alone
If you ever go I'm sure you'll come back home
Because I love you, I love you, I do
    Angel Baby, my Angel Baby

Uh uh, I love you, uh I do
No one could love you like I do
Uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh,
    uh, uh, uh,

    Fairport Convention

Pre-Sandy Denny with, instead, Judy Dyble, this session was recorded in 1968 for French T.V. Bouton Rouge Sessions. Morning Glory, Time Will Show The Wiser and Reno, Nevada. Aside from showcasing the band's devotion to an english-based folk rock along with a tremendous symmetry to a pre-Grace Slick Jefferson Airplane, this video displays a very young Richard Thompson. He takes some absolutely blistering solos in all three songs with some great ensemble jamming on the last track.

An excellent performance given sound limitations from back in the day-

You might recognize the intro from a song by another guy called Voodoo Chile. This thing warms up at about the 45 second mark and hits its swing.

Some very nice stuff here from Carnegie Hall in 1986. If Trouble Was Money-

    The Byrds

The Beatles (Act Naturally, Kansas City), The Buffalo Springfield (Kind Woman) and The Byrds (Mr. Space Man, Time Between) had broached the country side of things early on. It would take The Byrds releasing Sweetheart Of The Rodeo (with a full gamet of country side-men) to bring country right out into rock's open vistas. From the shambles of the Gram Parsons fronted-Byrds breakup, Roger McGuinn would reassemble a new Byrds featuring Clarence White, flat-picker extraordinaire from the Kentucky Colonels, on lead guitar.

Early on during 1967 sessions for Younger Than Yesterday, he'd played on this Chris Hillman gem, Time Between-
