Just being cute but a little play on Derek & the Dominos w/Clapton and his band to include Derek Trucks from the Allman Bros. doing a rave up version of Tell the Truth to open their set at the CROSSROADS festival in 2007. Great tune and I'm hoping it'll stay embedded-

This is a really interesting and, for me, poignant bit of music. Dolphins is a magical song written by Fred Neil, who really is a beat/folk icon of the early sixties New York scene. Something of an inspiration to guys like John Sebastian, David Crosby, Paul Kantner and others who'd go on to greatness in other bands later in their lives. At this point, though, New York was an amalgamation of the beat and pre-hippie folk scene. Bob Dylan was certainly around and, as mentioned, others.
One of those influenced by Fred Neil was Tim Buckley. Despite an incredible voice and a penchant/ear for really good music, he never made it, hovering just below stardom for his tragically short career. I believe he died from a heroin overdose so obviously qualifies under the DEAD DOPE DIVAS category.
Before doing so, he'd have a son-Jeff Buckley. Like his father, a special voice and a real ear for interesting and expressive stuff. A heroin addict like his father, Jeff took a midnight swim in a branch of the Mississippi in July of 1997 and was gone.
Here's Tim Buckley singing Dolphins by Fred Neil-
and Jeff Buckley singing "Hallelujah", a poem by Leonard Cohen and as emotive as any live performance I've seen. Almost quietly ugly at one point, but only because Jeff wishes it so. I'm not sure I've seen an artist sink deeper into the moment-

Two tracks from the album Dear Eloise/King Midas in Reverse for your listening enjoyment...
The very first live concert I attended was at Castaic Lake, CA circa 1992...Sonic Youth had just released Dirty and were touring in support of the new album with Pavement and Mudhoney, all of whom were basking in Nirvana's sunlight. As if to emphasize the point, Kurt Cobain even played a surprise solo acoustic set just before Sonic Youth took the stage. The grassy knoll surrounding Castaic Lake was trampled to the point that dust was getting kicked up and nobody could see the stage. The bands kept having to take 20 minute breaks in the middle of their set in order to catch their breath and let the dust settle...rather fitting, but a great show nonetheless.
Here's a track from a later album that's a personal favorite of mine...
Nailed me good with both of those tunes. I've heard Nash sing Midas solo on piano but never considered that it was a Hollies song and can't now for the life of me figure out why not.
Nor have I heard before Elevated Observations so, clearly, Dear Eloise might now be on my radar. Soooo much music, so little time. Muchas Gracias on that but I'm sure I've largely profiled myself...)

Saw em' in 91 back up Neil Young on his Ragged Glory tour. Hated them but now realize after that video that they suffered second actitis...poor "wall of mush" sound with no separation.
Got it here and got the band too. Easily could have been Portland in 1990. That whole scene was full-bore ON up here.
Great vid. I get it. Tell your drummer bud that he ain't the only one it hooked. I'm in.![]()

Free City Rhymes worked too. Very hypnotic groove that always gets S-2. Ethereal in a sonic sorta' way.![]()

A coworker of mine has been schooling me in late 60's psychedelia, for which I have a real soft spot...very hard on the pocketbook and you're not helping any!
In the meantime, what do you get when Gram Parsons meets Sonic Youth?
Wow!Never so in disagreement and grateful at once.
Incredible tune, great dynamics, and crapload of nicely miked guitars. WILCO IT IS, sir!
I'll be checking out more of that.
