Farnborough 2010 - Defense News Show Scout – Brazil To Buy 28 Embraer KC-390s
Posted by Bradley Peniston | July 22nd, 2010 | Uncategorized

By ANDREW CHUTER, FARNBOROUGH, UK – The Brazilian air force says it is to purchase an initial batch of 28 KC-390 airlifters from the machine’s developer, Embraer.

A letter of intent has been signed by the air force with the expectation that the first of the tactical aircraft will be delivered in 2016.

Embraer president and chief executive Frederico Fleury Curado said he expected the contract to be firmed up within the next three years.

The aircraft will replace the Brazilian air force’s C-130 Hercules fleet.

The twin-turbofan KC-390 recently passed a preliminary design phase that increase its payload by 4.6 tons to 23.6 tons.

The Brazilian aircraft builder is currently talking with potential industrial and international program partners.

I hope IAF would seriously look into the KC-390 project and see how it performs compared to Hercules, A400M and An-32.

The Russian aviation industry is falling apart (what a shame) and US aviation products come with too many strings attached and A400M is way overpriced.

India needs to seriously replace its aging fleet of 100 An-32s.

Interesting how Brazilian airforce went to Farnborough in the UK to buy from a Brazilian manufacturer... You figure they could have saved some trouble and stayed home. Or maybe this is just a show of support for your countrymen at the world's biggest air show.

Assuming they do what they're supposed to, they could pick up a lot of sales from the aging Hercules. If I were Embraer, I'd try to enter into some kind of partnership with Boeing and also look into a longer version to go up against the -30 Hercs.

Honestly Its a good thing to see Brazil developing its aviation industry and becoming a decent industrial power in its own right. South america has held so much potential if only they could get their political strings together long enough to help the populace out and develop the countries. With some of their other developments in bio fuel production in a few years I think you'll see Brazil emerge far more on the world stage.

More specifically Brazil has a interesting new aircraft here that they appear to be developing At this point it doesn't seem to have the short field take off performance of the 130. but it is notably cheaper. Personally I would like to see Lock-Mart develop an airplane somewhere between H and the J models avionics wise for the cheapness factor and see what they can do to set it up so that it can accept either a turbo-prop or a turbo fan as a field level change. something of an engine module stop and then sell the modules separate. The fan would give a slightly higher cruising speed with more fuel efficiency and probably a slightly larger grossing carrying capacity at a slightly longer range. The turbo prop short field service and rugged durability for those only lightly improved fields when needed.

Having the same systems across the rest of their aircraft decreases training and maintenance costs. I think you'd see a bunch of countries buy a dozen or two to replace their old worn out 130 fleets and they'd also buy a half dozen of the turbo prop kits to maintain the short / unimproved field performance when needed.

I would have thought its just a PR stunt, to try get the KC-390 some publicity, because its competing against some rather large competiters with a lot of airframes in service in multiple countries around the world.

    All is relative...

Experts say Russian companies had struck deals worth about $10 billion during this year's show.

Among the largest deals is the agreement between Russia's Irkut aircraft maker and Malaysian transportation holding company CRECOM Burj Resources, which stipulates the supply of 50 new MS-21 passenger airliners to Malaysia starting 2016. This will be the largest post-Soviet sale of Russia-made new generation planes abroad.

The MS-21 plane, which is still under development, is to replace the aging Tu-154, which currently accounts for the lion's share of passenger traffic in Russia and the CIS. It is also expected to compete with the Airbus A-320 and Boeing 737.

Irkut has agreed a total of 140 deliveries during the air show.

Russia's Sukhoi Civil Aircraft has clinched deals on as many as 161 Sukhoi Superjet 100 planes. The Superjet 100 is a family of medium-haul passenger aircraft developed by Sukhoi in cooperation with US and European aviation corporations, including Boeing, Snecma, Thales, Messier Dowty, Liebherr Aerospace and Honeywell.
As for Brazil's aviation industry, it's advance is amazing indeed.

They arent KC-390's though, and IIRC the KC-390 is competing against the C-130J, which is in service in many countries around the world.

Embraer already has 54 buyers for the KC-390. The plane has not even left the ground there is already strong buyers. The list includes:

    Brazil (FAB) - 28
    Chile - 6
    Colombia - 12
    Portugal - 6
    Czech Republic - 2

These countries are buying the KC-390, specifically, to replace its C-130.
The future of the KC-390 is very promising.

My only concern would be whether it could refuel helicopters or not being turbofan powered. If it can, I wouldn't find seeing it replace the Herc in USAF, USN, USMC, and USCG units.

The Embraer plane can still undergo changes throughout its development.
Customers are not seeking to Embraer the great powers, but more modest budgets of countries, South Americans, Africans, Asians and some of Europe possible.
The KC-390 has the advantage of a lower price than the Airbus A400M, C-130J, C-27J and An-72/74. This is because the Company will use many of its structures civic projects such as the EMB-170 and EMB-190.

This link no images for comparison with the C-130.
