    Vietnam People's Air Force

Lenta.ru: Îðóæèå: ÂÂÑ Âüåòíàìà ïîïîëíÿòñÿ 12 èñòðåáèòåëÿìè Ñó-30ÌÊ2

09:35 GMT, May 14, 2009 MOSCOW | Russia will supply 12 Su-30MK2 Flanker multi-role fighters to Vietnam under a contract worth more than $500 million, a Russian business daily reported on Thursday, according to Russia's RIA Novosti.

Vedomosti said the contract, which does not include weaponry, was signed between Russian arms export monopoly Rosoboronexport and the Vietnamese Defense Ministry in January, but was not disclosed until now.

Deliveries are to start in 2010.

Experts say the price of missiles, guns, and other equipment could run to an additional several hundred million dollars.

Last month, Admiralty Shipyards in St. Petersburg announced it would build six Kilo class diesel-electric submarines for Vietnam.

Vietnam bought them not to fight against a swarm of fighters from whom you know but more to carry anti-ship long range missiles and to play hit-and-run. Modern type of guerilla warfare.

    Hi VietPhuong

Just a couple of questions you may be able to help with....

Does Vietnam have the Kh-41 Moskit/SS-N-22SS-N-22 Sunburn missile and/or the P-800 Oniks/SS-N-26 Yakhont supersonic anti-ship cruise missile in Coastal Defence or air launched versions?

And at what pace are the ground forces modernizing?

According to this site the current build-up includes the acquisition last year from Ukraine of four Kolchuga passive sensor systems. Each system includes three sensors in order to simultaneously triangulate the position of up to 32 land, sea or aerial targets.

Also last year, Hanoi moved to address a long-standing deficiency in its maritime surveillance. It acquired three EADS-CASA C212 Series 400 maritime patrol and surveillance aircraft produced in Spain and equipped with the MSS 6000 side-looking airborne radar from Swedish Space Corporation.

Slow advance for Viet army revamp

Guess Vietnam is taking it one step at a time regarding defense as they're only spending about 2% percent of GDP at present, [compared to China's 4.3 for instance] & I suppose the Spratly Islands could possibly be a bone of contention in the future.

I can not say for sure but I think for ground launched missile, Vietnam has Moskits and Yakhonts. For air launched version, Moskits should be available due to operating of SU-27 squadrons for almost 10 years. Air launched Yakhonts and Urants, if not available at the moment, should come together with this deal. Rumor says they have been already stocked up before the deal but I don't want to say it is true.

About the ground force, Vietnam still believes an land attack from foreign power will not occur in a long time. The size of active ground force sinks to 400 thousand men. Due to "people war" philosophy, number of trained personnels is still very high; one source says 9 millions. From my point of view (I have also received military training in high school and university) the number of frequently and effectively trained personnel is lower, few millions? Still to have enough weapons to equip them in war is a problem. I think it explains why Vietnam is obtaining license and pushing up production of personal weapon: new AK rifle type, machine guns, automatic grenade launchers, RPGs and AT missiles. Vietnam is also upgrading and buying more T-72s MBT. T-80/T-90s is said to be available in very small number. If it is true then they are probably not for fighting but training purpose.

It is true that Spratly Islands should be the center of defense strategy but not all. The China's claim extends for the whole East Sea (South China Sea) with the 9-dash-line map.

    http://www.un.org/Depts/los/clcs_new...2009re_vnm.pdf

Now they only claim it as economic zone but it can turn into military zone anytime, like in the case of USS Impeccable. That means conflict can occur anywhere inside that map. An example and possible scenario is during this two months, China annually bans fishing in its seas, including South China Sea. How China handles foreign fishing ships in dispute water and how Vietnam navy respond to protect our civillians should be watched carefully.

Vietnam decided to cut the deal from 12 Su-30MK2s to 8 because of financial reason. Looks less scary and more Vietnam. )

    Thanks for the info VietPhuong.

As you say, probably nothing will blow up with your giant neighbor, although looking at ancient [& not so ancient] history, I guess Vietnam will always have to be on guard.

As for the Flankers, a few at a time & before you know it you'll have plenty.

Good luck to Vietnam them I say.

Knock yourselves out Vietnam and go for broke – 100 x Su-30MK2 would be good and fair, for both self esteem and to put the wind up ‘you know who’!!!!!!!!!!!!:P

Just imagine the excitement of their pilots when they received their first Su-27 Flanker’s
(I envisage it would have been like stepping from a T-Model Ford to a Corvette!)

There poor old MiG-21’s must be near worn out by now!
I wonder if Israel would have approached or spoken to them about MiG-21 Bison(ing) their venerable ‘Fishbed’ fleet?

Out of curiosity does anyone know how has Vietnam has gone with the servicing and maintaining of its small existing Su-27 fleet????

    Regards
    Pioneer

It seems an arms race in gonging on, China starts to retire the early batches of SU27, it makes me wonder what replacement China got and how to deal with Vietnam's new acquisition.
