Alenia Aeronautica: Turkey expresses interest in 40/80 Eurofighter Typhoon

Alenia Aeronautica has confirmed that Turkey is interested in purchasing 40/80 Eurofighter Typhoon. It has also stated that it is looking for ways of making Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) a full partner in the Eurofighter program.

It looks like Turkey is really serious about expanding its combat aircraft fleet.....116 F-35 (on order) + 240 F-16 CCIP + 40 (+80 option) Eurofighter Typhoon + 46 F-4E Terminator 2020...this is a very big combat fleet!

Many European and non-European countries have formally expressed interest for this aircraft. With these countries information exchange or real trade have already begun. Up till now the following countries have showed interest for the Eurofighter Typhoon: Turkey (40/80 aircrafts), Greece (60 aircrafts), Romania (48 aircrafts), Japan (50 aircrafts), Switzerland (33 aircrafts), Bulgaria (12 aircrafts), India (126 aircrafts).
This means an over-350 aircraft’s potential business in the amount of more than € 35 billions relating to the aircraft’s supply and to the relevant logistic support.

Alenia Aeronautica is one of the most advanced aeronautical companies and started a fruitful industrial collaboration with Turkish Aerospace Industry for the development of the ATR 72 ASW, the new generation maritime patrol and anti-submarine warfare aircraft ordered by Turkish Navy and is exploring any possible solution to have Turkish aerospace industry joining the most important industrial partnership of Europe, the Eurofighter Typhoon, the most advanced swing role fighter available on the world market. Joining the Eurofighter programme, Turkish aerospace companies will be real partners of the Eurofighter Consortium, they will have access to significant and evolving high technologies and source codes; involment in the enhancement programmes, full access to capability to self repair the aircraft in service, full capabilities for updates and upgrades of the aircraft in service and significant spin-off to other European aerospace programmes.

I begin to wonder if those aren't a replacement for the Terminator F-4's that turkey still has on active duty. F-4's still in service at this time have to be becoming questionable. Though as a High speed bomber if the airframe is still in decent shape its probably fairly capable.

i believe Turkey's primary interest would be to get know-how.

i think purche decision of that much aircraft (considering on going economic recession across the globe) would have some decent tech transfer conditions.

The annual military budget it's around 2.2 billion euro (2% GDP). For the next four years it would be increased (4 % GDP) to cover the military modernization spendings.

How much from that goes to fighters i don't know.

The official budget of the Turkish Armed forces is not known with complete certainty. It could be easily within the 2% to 5% range. The reason being that the TAF has other very significant non-Government budget sources of income. These include income from lotteries, Petroleum exploration, Animal Hide sales etc

Furthermore, most Military acquisitions are made through the Savunma Sanayii Mustesarligi, and thus not reported in the Defence budget.

Turkey also initiated a $160 billion modernization program in 2000. This is independent of the yearly military budget.

Despite all this it was recently reported that there has been a decline in military expenditure. However, again it was reported that this decline was not the result of less procurement but rather the product of indigenous technology development. Turkey currently has a AAW Frigate program, a next generation Tank Program, Recon. Satellite Programs, a Corvette program, a UCAV program, Guided Missile programs, Anti-tank laser guided missile programs, light and heavy torpedo programs etc etc All these will lead to a further reduction in defense budget.

Rather than asking how these acquisitions are financed, the most important question should be why all this build up of arms? What is Turkey's threat assessment?

i believe that the real threat is the economic one.

billions of dollars would not to be spent if Turkey have the capability of producing those high tech weaponry.

And the Rafale can't get any love. I'm actually beginning to feel bad for Dassault.

dont feel bad for them, they should have stayed part of the eurofighter programme. If they had they could have probably talked the UK into going in with them to produce carrier variants

They pulled out because the bloody programme was dragging for too long...
France managed to produce a comparable aircraft ( carrier variant also) alone ,before the big four ...

Not to mention France wanted a multpurpose plane from the start. The original Typhoon was designed to be an air-superiority fighter. It was only latter that air-to-ground was added...
