    AESA v/s PESA

    Hey there guys,

I'm not a very technical person and so I don't know the difference between AESA and PESA. And, I've seen quite some serious debates in many places about both the technologies.

Most of them seemed to suggest that AESA is better because it is newer.

But, as a pilot, what difference and advantage would AESA give me over PESA ??? Also, are the ranges of detection, shotting etc the same or higher with a PESA radar ???

Also, how would the new AESA radar that India would acquire with the MRCA aircraft compare with the PESA fitted on the Su-30MKI ??? I know the MRCA hasn't been decided yet, but I want an answer assuming that it's possibly the Super Hornet which would be chosen...

It can do the things a PESA does more faster and efficiently, even if it does it in the same range, like scanning the required area for planes along with scanning a bigger area. It can differentiate between detected aircrafts more clearly.

    No chance of mechanical failure.

It is divided into a number of small modules(small radars) of transmitters and receivers where even if a single module fails the rest of the radar is able to function and compensate. Can go for a longer time without a failure hence less maintaining effort and cost issues. which will cut down on the cost and make sure the planes can perform the missions more effectively.

It can keep the aircraft aware about the threats on the ground and air without ignoring either.

Its also a new technology with muchmore potentials in future as opposed to PESA which has been around for some time.

The AESA radar will in comparison of PESA on SU-30MKI pay its value back over the period of time the plane serves in the IAF, it will also be able to do the same job more effectively as there is more accurate data from the area the radar is able to scan the computers can then scan and track a target more effectively, even smaller targets flying close to surface like cruise missiles and target them with missiles.

Do not be worried about the range that the radars can function at though, these are going to serve with really huge, mammoth AESA radars on the phalcon radar systems (on A-50) planes that InAF is acquiring along with smaller AWAC with AESA radars form a home based project, AESA Aerostat Radars (a AESA radar on a blimp/ballon tied to the ground with data and power connections to a ground station), along with land based AESA early warning radars, so they will have plenty of early warning with the ability to pin point the target more effectively and responding to them if required.

Do not be surprised if the Su-30MKI receives a AESA upgrade in the coming years (2015-2020) it will be a decade old by 2010.

there is plenty of stuff online about this, give it a read.
