What would it be like if we could build a full sized replica of the Mosquito, using modern composite material instead of wood for strength and durability, and swap out those Merlins for modern turboprops?
I was at the Miramar Airshow a few weeks ago. It was great seeing all the new planes in flight. But I think the one sound I will never forget was the sound of a Merlin.
The emcee announced to the crowd that the music would be turned down so the crowd could hear the "sweet sound of a Merlin." Then the PA system was off and the P-51 flew by. It was the sweetest sound an engine could make. It was humming effortlessly along the flight path, carrying the Mustang through the grand stand. It didn't sound overpowering like the modern jet engines. It wasn't rough like Ferrari. It didn't purposely try to be loud like a Harley. That's what a machine should sound like. Smooth. Effortless. Refined. And unforgettable.
