Agreed it is all speculation. Since he is grounded he would continue to draw his base salary but not his flight pay. Perhaps the amount compensates for the difference of the life of his income as flight pay + base as opposed to just base. Just a thought

Boeing was clearly at fault with non-spec and sub-standard components being used in the assembly. I don't know the extent of the pilots injuries and I would be bloody miffed if it had happened to me. However, all the facts have not been released. As an airline pilot he will almost certainly have been in a union, and thus will have 'Loss of Licence' insurance' which should keep him and any family in comfort. I assume if he is invalided out of the service he will also be entitled to compensation. In the British forces we have our own military legal services branch. They are there to resolve financial as well as legal problems, and I have not heard of a British serviceman sueing the manufacturer of defective equipment. That is not the way things are done here. I'm sure there is more behind his modest claim than meets the eye.

The reason why the Major went for $75,000 because I am guessing that this is a diversity case meaning it is a case between citizens between different states and in order to have a diversity case, you have to have a minimum of damages of over $75,000 in order to use the federal court system otherwise he would be stuck in a state court system.
