The Tu-95s have entered NATO's Air Defence Identification Zone. That's not illegal at all, provided they're non-hostile.

If they were to enter actual UK airspace, then things would be interesting.
Didn't they shoot up 12 or 13 of SA-2 missles with the loss of one of their own aircraft to bring down Powers?

Hey gunnut!

I don't know how to take you on this answer..... ? I've heard that the U.S. has flown several missions over the U.S.S.R., but the SR-71 flew too high and fast and evaded enemy surface to air missiles. In response, Russia developed the Mig-25, or something like that to counter the threat!?

If your or someone could rebuttal this info, I would greatly appreciate it!!!

Thanks!!

The MiG-25 Foxbat was designed to be a counter to the B-70 that the Russians believed was going into quantity production. In fact only 2 unarmed prototypes of the Valkyrie were built, and they were used for research purposes. As was often the case in the former USSR once a type was geared up for production they kept churning them out in significant numbers, hence all those Foxbats.

U-2's are capable of in air refueling so to monitor south central USSR it was flown out of various middle eastern, central asian, and eastern european countries. For that matter it still is so that it can have a long loiter time and make a large number of passes. Actual in practice most of the time at least in my experiance the U-2 is over its mission area not long after it reaches altitude, of course in most deployed area's it is climbing at a very high rate, crazed glider with a jet engine.

I don't know much about the current U-2s but the early versions were most demanding to fly, especially at great altitude where there was a 4 knot band between Mach buffet and the pre-stall buffet. Holey moley!

They've been re-engined and have a different intake setup. I dont know, but my assumption is the design change was to fix/alleviate that.

Indeed they did. Spammed him out of the sky. It generally took a lot of missiles to do that in Vietnam.
