The Backfire was featured in a recent edition of Air International but unfortunately the dimensions of the bomb bay was not given. We do know that the Tu-22M3 (Backfire C) has a maximum weapon load of 24,000 kg (52,910 lbs) but if more than 12,000 kg is carried the fuel load (and of course the range) will have to be reduced. Maximum fuel is 14,760 Imperial gallons (67,090 litres). It can carry 3 Kh-14 (AS-16 Kickback) missiles, one semi recessed under the fuselage and one under each wing under the fixed glove. The typical war load is a single Kh-14. Alternatively 6 x Kh-15 can be carried on a rotary launcher in the bomb bay and a further 4 under the wings. Free fall bombs can be carried in the bomb bay as well as on 4 external racks with each rack carrying 6 x 500 kg (1,100 lbs) bombs. Alternative loads for mine dropping are 8 big ones or 18 smaller ones. In Afghanistan 3,000 kg (6614 lbs) bombs were dropped, as well as the 500 kg jobbies. The Backfire fleet is currently being up-graded after years of neglect. It remains a formidable aircraft.

On a related subject, why do a lot of older Western sources seriously over-estimate the Tu-22M's combat radius?

If Jane's is to be trusted :

* length : ~ 7 meters / 23 feet
* width : ~ 1.8 meters / 6 feet

The Tu-22M3 Backfire is very amazing , we feared alot from Backfires during the cold war, the soviets had alot of regiments of them.
Actually from all Russian aircraft the Tu-22M3 is one of my favorite.

Agree. The Tu-22M3 is also my favourite Russian plane.

Jimmy, I guess that was a flippant response.

You could say that. Its a good source for descriptions and pictures, but I wouldnt put any of those numbers into even an unclassified briefing. Some of that stuff is just jaw-droppingly ridiculous. I wish I could throw out an example, but I havent bothered looking at it in several years, so I've long forgotten the biggest eye-rollers.

The problem with sites like that is that even if half of it is accurate, how do you tell what's good info and what's not? It just loses credibility.

Honestly I tend to just go with 2 or 3 sources that are publically availible and close on most of it. My experiance is that its particulars that are grossly wrong not broad generalities and its somewhat silly to get that deep into numbers in general discussion topics anyways.

Don't give out numbers even if its not officially classified, its better to have more wild assed guesses out there and specific because people's published wild assed guesses can sometimes make otherwise good intel get questioned.

That's what I would do if I had to give an unclass briefing. Look it up on wikipedia, fas, and globalsecurity. If they're noticably different I'd take an average. Once I finished up initial training, that kind of work went away, fortunately.
