What's the aircraft in the background?

Hey guys, I ran across this photo of the Italian aircraft Z.506 Airone, and noticed there is a German aircraft in the background. What is it?

The link to the photo is here:
WW2DB: [Photo] Z.506 Airone aircraft being transported on land, date unknown

Interestingly, it seems to be some sort of biplane...

Also, please check out my audio book giveaway contest! The link to the rule is here:

Pete, my guess and that's all it is..... a Dornier Do-24. As far as I know it was the only flying boat style aircraft manufactured by the Germans during WWII.

From my investigation.. I am going to guess it is an Heinkel He60

the He 60 is way to small....but maybe it is a captured allied plane pressed into German service? Maybe something Dutch or French?

Dornier Do-18, I think.

Actually, Do-24 does look like it. Why do you say it can't be?

I think it is a Do-24 Pete, just shown from a different angle and the one in your picture appears to have the 20mm defensive turret. The struts between the body and the wing and the cockpit glass look pretty similiar, but then again, what the hell do I know??

It was mainly the lack of the turret which caused me to write it, but I surely can be simply wrong. After all I am just a civilian with lots of books without any realy knowledge about this stuff *g*

The twin rudders, slender tail, wing struts and small lower wings (barely visible in the first photo - but there anyway) certainly says you picked the right plane. But pressed into rescue service with the red crosses.

Oh. Wait. That's a black and white photo, so those may be green crosses. If so then it was pressed into surrender negotiations. But it does have hackenkreuzes on the rudders also.

Definitely a Dornier Do 24.

It does rather look like that from an angle, but in fact they are sponsons, which provided waterborne stability instead of using wing mounted floats. The sponsons gave lift in flight and held the fuel tanks. It was much easier to refill them than having to climb on a wing to do so.

Thanks to all! I'm marking it on the page as a Do 24.
