What was the most important piece of gear for the crew chief and/or troops in the back of the CH-47B?

I don't know about the crew chief, but I watched a buddy next to me fill his kevlar with breakfast when we hit some turbulence in Honduras once! Then he had to hold it for another 45 min till we got back to Palmerola. PEWWWWEEEE!

I would guess a safety item of some sort? Maybe..........fishing a little.......hint, hint

Ahh, you are too young!

The Bravo model was not in service when the Kevlar was introduced...just a few Charlies, Super Charlies and the new Delta model.

That is you clue! The Delta Model.

Ok, So by '86 all bravos were out of service. Since I swear I never saw a new CH-47, then it would most likely be a C model I was riding in. Where there still Cs in service by '89?

I think they were Super Charlies and Deltas by then.

Further clue.

What was different about the Delta as compared to the Bravos and Charlies?

The only thing I could identify where better engines and GPS capability on the latter.

You mentioned Kevlar (which is the copywiite name of Aramid Fiber by DuPont). So I would say a panel of resin bonded Kevlar armor.

I am in a kind mood

The Bravo and Charlie models had huge amounts of hydraulic lines running through the fuselage...and they leaked like a sieve.

Crew chiefs always had a case of hydraulic fluid stored aboard in order to keep the system topped off.

So the most important piece of gear? Their wet weather jacket to keep their uniforms from being oiled up from the leaking fluid.

The Delta model has more fly by wire systems which reduced the reliance on hydraulics...which kept the leaking down to a dull roar.

Anyone can take it from here.
