Actually, though unintentional, it was the US Navy's DASH (Drone Anti Submarine Helicopter) that could do a half roll.

As I said, it was unintentional and eventually led to other methods of getting MK-46 torpedos out over the horizon. As soon as it dropped the torpedo, The CG went up and the helo flipped over. But as programmed it flew back to the ship where the "pilot" with his remote control panel normally would take over and land it.

Well, with it being upside down --- it was another "AWE SH*T" and you can guess the rest of it.

Cool video `sniper!!! I wonder if Glyn has ever done a loop in a helicopter! Do tell Glyn! I couldn`t even imagine doing a loop in a helicopter, I would be a reluctant passenger! Aww, what the hell, I would probably get in anyway!

I must say, the best helicopter displays I have ever seen have been from the CH-47 Chinook, the RAF put on some of the most memorable displays I have ever seen over here. YouTube - RAF Chinook Display Team

Now for my question...
It is kind of aviation related, so here goes..

What is the fastest man made powered vehicle ever?

Without looking it up, mind you, I would guess the space shuttle. I believe in orbit it does over 20,000mph!

Christ `sniper, those guys had steel Cajones! Those Marines certainly had a story to tell the kids. Must be fantastic to be the "first" to do something so exciting! That is a BIG helo` to loop and roll, very impressive.

Jet Ranger and a PUMA has been my lot!
My absolute DREAM though, is to fly in a Thunder City BAC Lightning down in South Africa! At $10,000 a flight, I had better start saving! Sat in a cockpit as a kid and I was hooked!

Sorry `sniper, I didn`t follow your last post? I am afraid both you and Zraver are incorrect with the answer to my question though! However, you are both in the correct arena!

`Sniper, yes it is the BAC Lightning indeed! The first supercruiser and with 50,000 ft a min` climb rate! Gnarly!

The question? Unmanned.
Zraver got it right, a couple of Solar probes designated Helios I and II are the fastest man made objects. Even faster than the distant Voyager, Pioneer probes.

Zraver, I would guess your picture is of the highest recorded parachute jump, with the intrepid hero exiting a gondola at a ridiculous height! But bedtime calls and I will be retiring as well!

"In 1960 Captain Joseph Kittinger of US Air Force bailed out of a polyethylene plastic balloon at 31,354 m setting a new altitude record for balloon flight and a new record for parachute descent."

A few years later a movie was made of that starring (I think) Guy Madison. They showed that dropping dummies out of gondolas was no good because they flipped and flopped and sharled their parachutes.

But a human being moving his arms and legs in a swimming motion can maintain equilibrium and open his chute safely.

However, searching Madison's filmography doesn't show that movie. It may have been another actor that looked like him and it was a very good movie explaining the reasons for those tests.

Interestingly, the Official Government Report on the Rosewell incident claims it was those test drop dummies that people thought were aliens. But those tests didn't start until about 10 years later.

Oh well, if it's from the Government it must be right.
