This thread seems to have died off, but maybe we can get it rolling again.

I remember this picture being a real head-scratcher the first time I saw it. Any guesses?

What is the fastest speed achieved by a piston engine aircraft on a closed course, and which aircraft achieved it?

I'm going to go with 528.33 mph, achieved by the Grumman F8F Bearcat.

You are correct. Rare Bear was its name, and clearly it was much modified from the stock bearcat.
    Over to you

Correct! I didn't even have to give the second clue (which would have been to right click the photo and look at the file name under properties)

On the "fastest piston aircraft" question, I immediately thought of the Tu-95 Bear, and had actually typed up a reply with that one. Then I remembered that turboprops don't have pistons, considered for a while more, and decided it had to be the XF-84H Thunderscreech. Civilian race planes never even occurred to me; always neat to learn something new.

    ---

I suspect someone will get this one quickly, since it seems to crop up in discussions every now and then. But maybe not.

It's a Cierva W.9, or some related development.

Love that thing. It looks like someone built a helicopter out of a section of sewer pipe on a dare.
