WW1 Biplanes in modern Air To Air Combat

I had a thought last night. Can you detect a WW1 biplane on a modern IRST system or radar?

amateur speaking here but I think the question would be rather if they would be identified as what they are, rather than detected.
    uh I might be wrong

You'd think that they'd have to have some system of tracking them for the purpose of Air Traffic Control. There are still a few flying around in the hands of enthusiasts after all.

Ah and the brits had (to best of my knowledge) no problem detecting the Italian Biplanes with radar during the Battle For Britain.
    uh I might be wrong

What use is a WWI biplane in modern air to air combat? The idea's beyond ridiculous. I can see them being used for third-world bombing sorties, maybe, such as when the Tamil Tigers bombed Colombo.

Years ago someone wrote a fun short story about a test pilot for some new super jet fighter getting shot back in time to WWI France.

There were some fun descriptions of how useless his super jet was against biplanes - poor radar locks, no heat signatures strong enough, and he was too fast for simple gun kills.

Eventually he just shockwaved a squadron or two to pieces with a well-timed sonic boom or something.

    Fun read.

Reminds me of The Final Countdown. The USS Nimitz gets sent back to just before Pearl Harbor. F-14 takes out a Zero using a Sidewinder.

If the Sidewinder is advanced enough it might get a lock on the piston engine of the Zero.

Later generation Winders have supercooled IR detectors for better target definition. It just might be enough to lock on to a WW2 era engine.

I doubt the early missiles can get a lock. They lose the target if it's too close to the sun.

Yeah, Dalem, that was a sci-fi short story in Analog. They loaded him up with kerosene, but his missiles didn't work. He used vortice mechanics to knock 'em out.

I read that very same story. It made some good points in that fabric covered airframes don't reflect radar very well. I enjoyed the story including the references to a skeptical tall French soldier by the name of Charles something or other.

if a fi9ghters gun can strafe a tank doing 45km/h it can hit a biplane doing 160km/h

I think he was out of gun rounds pretty quickly. Not enough time readjust his lead time.

should not be much different from hunting helicopters with guns, about the same speed.
