OK, let's get a tad more specific:

An IR-based SAM. Preferably one from France or China.

In fact, I'm probably going to change my screenplay so an E/A-18G is shot down instead.

Some of the upgraded SA-9's are also very very good especially tied in with an integrated radar-net (oddly enough I don't know much about US SAM's but know a fair amount about eastern bloc ones or at least what the US thinks about them silly EWS training.). Anyways they are singlly not a huge threat to fighter aircraft with a radar warning receivers and a counter measures suite. If the pilot is asleep it can pose issues. Now lots of them over an area with different systems can be alot more of a threat.
