Simmulacrum has said enough on Turkish in-house design and production capabilities, that I will not comment further on that issue.

However, as to the Stealth Technology which was developed recently by engineers of Middle Eastern Technical University, I have a few thing to say. This news was made public on 14.11.2007. Please read the articles carefully. Engineers at METU have discovered a radar absorbent material -aka RAM- not stealth technology. Stealth is not a matter of applying RAM on a non-stealth design. It is more complicated than that, and some board members who know a lot on the subject can comment further. Turkey is not jumping into the stealth design age from today until tomorrow. It has begun an individual -not instututionalized effort. This applies to the T-129 project as well. It is very hard-if not next to impossible- to take a 30 year old design, keep the main components as they are, and significantly redevelop a stealthy design.

With regards to Turkish Defence Procurements, and upcoming tenders, here's a brief overview :

In all major systems, including MBTs, Land Systems, Aircraft, Attack Helicopters...etc. Turkey has relied on foreign designs and systems until today. There is a move towards the establishment of a fully functional and capable MIC in Turkey, however, as of today, it is lagging behind its contemporaries. I expect to see an improvement in the upcoming years, however, it will be quite a while until Turkish design and production capabilities reach the level of IMI let alone Sukhoi or BAE. Creating and developing a MIC is a matter of inventing, designing and bringing together the means to produce products. I doubt Turkey can phydically and financially afford to establish an independent capability in all categories on National Defence. For the moment, in all critical areas, the Prime Contactors of Turkish Defence Procurements are non-Turkish. The MilGem project needs mention here; however, it is an ASW and patrol platform, whereas the primary war making capability of Turkish Navy is designed around its force of frigates.

Turkish Armed Forces do not employ any Tactical or Theater SAM system.

Ucar in relation to stealth technology I was not refering to the Radar Absorbing Coating (which is centered around BaFe12O19 compound) developed by the Middle East Technical University. I am refering to R&D currently being conducted in conjunction with the SSM and TUBITAK. This research is focussing on design principles for reducing radar signitures in Aircraft and Frigates. It is this research which is the driving force in the MILGEM corvette, TF2000 Frigate project and TIHA UCAV project.

This does not mean that Turkish companies do not design or even produce these. It just means that the Turkish Armed Forces have not commissioned these!
Please refer to this government website! ANNOUNCEMENT RELATED TO THE COMPANIES WHO HAVE PROVIDED RESPONSE TO THE TURKISH MEDIUM ALTITUDE AIR DEFENCE MISSILE SYSTEM (T-MALADMIS) REQUEST FOR INFORMATION (RFI) (September 6th, 2007)

8 Turkish companies have proven designs/systems for a MEDIUM ALTITUDE AIR DEFENCE MISSILE SYSTEM !!! Its just that the Turkish Armed Forces has not been game enough to rely on Turkish Made platforms!

Which SAMs exactly has turkey designed. At least in prototype stage?

The most talked about and speculated is the system designed by ROKETSAN. For some reason however (the motives of which I don't understand) not much details about the project is released, besides the fact that the Turkish Procurement Department accepts it is as a "Proven design".

It's propably another joint-venture between China, just like they did with Project J and the WS-1B, balistic and quasi-balistic missiles.

Also, back in the 90's, it must be noted that Russia had offered Turkey to work together (co-production) on the S300 CENTRAL ASIA - CAUCASUS ANALYST.

The US company Lockheed Martin had also offered considerable technology transfer to Turkey for the PAC-3 Lockheed Martin offers tech transfer to Turkey in air defense deal - Turkish Daily News Aug 25, 2006

Hence, I think some Turkish Companies may have partnered with China, Russia or the US and the ROKETSAN design is the product of this venture.

It remains to be seen...which route Turkey will take....

You're certainly very patriotic. So Turkey has designed ONE SAM? And the Turkish Armed Forces chose NOT to purchase it? Interesting. That and some speculation on possible joint ventures with no concrete evidence. Not convincing. Not convincing at all.

Don't worry my patriotism is not affecting my opinion. I am being very objective. Unfortunately, Turkey is very secretive when it comes to its defence projects, hence we have trouble proving or providing information regarding certain projects. However, the information is more than sufficient to show Turkey's capabilities.

Infact, Turkey still denies the existence of Project J and the WS-1B missiles, despite it been seen and photographed on Turkish soil and despite it being confirmed by Chinese authorities that yes they have developed it together with Turkey.

Regarding the Joint-ventures I draw your attention back to the references provided in my previous post. Furthermore, a Google search will also prove the vast offers of co-operation on such projects. Soon, the Israeli Arrow system could be added to that list. If Turkey follows on with its promise to provide Israel with a water and Oil pipeline, then co-production of the Arrow could also be a reality.

I also invite you to research with an open and non-biased mind. The Turkish Defence Industry is a sleeping giant...which is in the process of waking up from hybernation! Turkey has exported technology to the US, France, Germany and Holland! Countries which are worlds leaders in innovation!

It's an infant sleeping in it's cradle. Not a giant. And many foreign weapons manufacturers are waiting to smother the infant with a pillow.

The term "proven design" is the confusing point here. It is not possible for the 8 Turkish companies -with no prior experience in the field- who have responded to the RFI to have designed 8 seperate Medium Altitude SAM systems and "proven" them. I think Khan Han needs to explain this in further detail.

These companies have not submitted their bids for the contract yet, they are only inquiring to learn the requirements of Turkish Armed Forces.

The same also applies for the T-LALADMIS and T-LORAMIDS procurement projects.

Stinger based systems aside, there is no public knowledge of a Turkish in-house designed SAM system that has successfully been tested. I would be very happy to see some links, or any other information on this.

Turkey has approved a $160 billion (no mistake) modernization program for it's armed forces. 95% of this will opt for indigenously designed platforms!! These include National Frigates, National MBT's, National Satelites (2 foreign sources 16 by Turkish Companies such as TAI-TUSAS, ASELSAN, TUBITAK inter alia), National Attack helis, UCAV's, Unmanned Jet-Skis, Unmanned Attack helis, and much more.

All these projects by law, must be produced in Turkey with Full-Technology transfer! That is, why Sikorsky has lost a $1.2 billion Heavy-lift Helicopter bid just recently. Because they would not transfer technology nor provide for a local production line. But our Italian friends at AGUSTA have agreed for all two!

Hence, Feanor those "many foreign weapons manufacturers [who] are waiting to smother the infant" will be waiting for a long time!!

The Turkish Armed Forces have learn't alot from the Iraqi war and will never rely on foreign technology for critical units!! TUBITAK is even working on an advanced RADAR which will detect objects with only 0.8m2 of surface area!!
