M21, could you tell me some of the requirements of infantry? I am in good shape, but I did get surgery on my left knee..nothing serious. Just drained out ripped tissues, and cleaned up my blood on my knee.
The Doc said my knee was in perfect condition, and my lateral meniscus was in good shape so it wasn't like I had major surgery. I was thinking I will go get my GED and try to join the AFA, possibly I dont want to quit now but if it doesnt work I would consider joining Infantry.

I made it fine through Navy boot camp with a messed up knee. I was actually in better shape when I went into boot camp than when I came out because I jogged alot, but all that does is tell you how easy Navy boot camp was in 1975... I finally had the knee operated on in 1986 and they pulled out torn cartilage. I also had an ACL that "looked like a split end on a hair" according to the doctor but they didn't repair it because I didn't have enough sick time…. We're still waiting for it to pop…….. The only thing that really bothered me was standing watch. That made the knee hurt, cold weather doesn't help either……

Buff, you wanna score at least 50 on the ASVAB, and get a GED. No criminal record, and don't fail the piss test.
They'll guarantee infantry in your contract(11X), but it will be a general infantry posting. You could end up as an 11B, which is your front line combat grunt, an 11H, TOW crewman, 11H4(? foggy memory), which is a light antitank(Javelin/Dragon) grunt, or an 11C, which is a mortarman. If you do well on the ASVAB(60 or more), you may be able to get airborne guaranteed as well, but at the cost of a cash bonus. If you want jump wings, get them guaranteed when you sign, or you won't get them at all. If you ace the ASVAB(70 or more), you may be able to get RIP guaranteed in your contract. That's one of the above mentioned grunt types with airborne and RIP(Ranger Indoctrination Program). Pass all those schools, and your first permanent party assignment will be the 75th Ranger Regiment. BTW, that don't make you a Ranger, there is a separate 10 month Ranger school to earn the ranger tab, but graduation from RIP earns you the honor of wearing the 75th Ranger banner and serving in one of the three battalions of the 75th Ranger regiment. If you succeed in the 75th, you will eventually get to go to ranger school too. You get 'tabbed', and Special forces school is there if you want it. Of course, it aint as easy as it sounds. Life as a Cavalry scout aint to boring either. That's a 19 Delta i think(or is that a DAT?). |
