    F 22 testing progress thread

    F-22 testing has been curtailed to save program costs, but risks hiding flaws until a point at which fixing flaws becomes unaffordable.[11] The US Government Accounting Office cautions, "Moreover, engine and stealthiness problems already disclosed by the DoD, and the potential for avionics and software problems, underscore the need to demonstrate the weapon system’s performance through flight testing before significant commitments are made to production."[12]

    and another article http://www.pogo.org/p/defense/dt-060701-f22a.html

    This is odd though seems the GAO and POGO and the rest of the left wing asssholes like to play dirty.

    After 19 years of development, the Lockheed Martin/Boeing F/A-22 Raptor has reached the final hurdle before entering service with the US Air Force. Follow-on test and evaluation of the stealth fighter began on 29 August, with the USAF still planning to declare initial operational capability in December.

    A recent Government Accountability Office report said test officials identified reliability and maintenance issues with the plane's "critical low observable," or stealth, characteristics. The Air Force said it has fixed those problems..... While earlier versions of the software sometimes needed to be restarted every two hours, the Air Force says such problems can be expected in any new plane, and the latest version operates at least eight hours without glitches. The new software, expected to be in the Langley fighters soon, is more reliable, Hecker said later. "In two months, we'll be really happy."

    Speaking prior to a lecture he delivered at the National Museum of the United States Air Force here, Lt. Col. Evan Thomas, a Raptor pilot who commands the 411th Flight Test Squadron at Edwards Air Force Base, Calif., said testing finished ahead of schedule.

    “I’m very optimistic,” Colonel Thomas said. “The airplane did very well in operational testing.”

    He said the process of readying the Raptor for its operational testing -- from refining and validating the aircraft’s key attributes to training pilots -- proved a significant effort and enabled operational testing to be conducted successfully and ahead of schedule.

    * To ensure operational flexibility, the F-22 will be more reliable and maintainable than any military fighter in history. Increased F-22 reliability and maintainability pays off in less manpower required to fix the aircraft and consequently less airlift required to support a deployed squadron. Additionally, reduced maintenance support provides the benefit of reduced life-cycle cost and the ability to operate more efficiently from prepared or dispersed operating locations
    * F-22 is the only viable air dominance option. F-22 has logged over 6000 hours of flight testing and is ready to go into production

    light Test Data Performance Criteria
    The F-22 has achieved all 2001 flight-performance criteria and F-22 program criteria established by DoD and the Air Force to include:

    * F-22 Aircraft Performance Continues To
    Demonstrate Outstanding Combat Capability
    * Fatigue Testing Has Completed approximately
    20,000 Simulated Flight Hours, Equivalent to 2.5 Aircraft Lifetimes

    Developmental testing is essentially complete.

    F-22 Raptor Has Accomplished More Flight Testing Than Any Other Fighter Prior to Its Production
    The purpose of every flight test program is to determine an aircraft’s final design. Simulation is fine, up to a point, and has been used more effectively on the F-22 than on any prior aircraft, but there are performance parameters that can only be checked and validated through actual flight testing. Testing to date has indicated that the F-22 will require minor necessary design refinements and we have made those changes.

    F-22 Capabilities Demonstrated to Date - Testing Essentially Complete

    * Aerial Refueling - KC-10 and KC-135
    * External Fuel Tank Carriage
    * 1,724 Mile Non-stop Ferry
    * AIM-9 and AIM-120 Missile Separation - Subsonic and Supersonic
    * In-Flight Gun Firing
    * Supercruise
    * Stealth
    * High Angle-of-Attack Post-Stall Flight with Thrust Vectoring
    * Integrated Avionics Data Fusion
    * Intraflight Data Link
    * AIM-9 and AIM-120 Guided Launches - Subsonic and Supersonic
    * Electronic Warfare
    * Countermeasures
    * Software Stability
    * Four-Ship Offensive and Defensive Capability
    * JTIDS (Joint Tactical Information Distribution System)

    The QDR recognizes it's importance.Historically every weapon system has been called a piece of crap,cold war icon,useless hunk of junk etc. I seriously don't get what their beef is.The politicians are usingt he same tactics. This is the same crap that went on during the F15 and F 16 time period!!!

    Remeber when they we're saying F-4's we're good enough lol!!!!!!!

    urmomma, some of this is 10 or 12 years old.

    None of it is current.

    What is the point of your thread???

    That I hate the damn politicians that wanna take away our weapons crucial to US security.

    Off topic but another thing that pisses me off in that POGO article is they say the LA class is the best sub in the world.

    Im sure they can't see the SSK's and they're no threat. Another thing they're going to say is an SSK is a better option LOL. In order to find an SSK you need to have a very good sensor suite which only an SSN can provide thanks to amount of power for high powered active sonar and space for the sensor and associated computers.

    And im sure the Kilo,Akula improved, and upcoming Russian SSN is no threat whatsoever.
    LOL My point is why do they do this. EVERY SINGLE weapon sys has been been called crap in the past and im sick of it!

    I think i need a vacation(sad).
