Is there any chances the russians are putting all eggs in one basket for this?
I think making a single fighter wud show the further reduction of russian aviation industry they shud atleast make 2. cuz i dunno if US puted its all eggs in one basket for raptor or not. |

Just learned that fly tests of AL-41 are completed with all hours required. It was tested on Flankers and gives supercruise - supersonic flight without afterburner and with affordable fuel consumption.
However Saturn thinks that AL-41 lacks a lot as it had to inherit a lot from AL-31.... they lacked funds in 1990-es and financed a lot themselves. So they had to use a lot from earlier model.... this is not a new design from scratch. And this limited its capabilities. So Saturn wants money and time to design A WHOLE NEW 5th gen engine. They believe they can exceed F119-PW-100 thrust with great margin if they are given proper funding. Indeed they learned a lot while comming with AL-41. Instead they propose to re-engine existing Flankers with AL-41 giving them supercruise at speed somewhat slower than what Raptor can sustain. This would give Flankers second life untill 5th gen is launched and mass produced. With supercruise Flanker's large internal fuel tanks are quite a good thing!!! Some of this difference comes from lower thrust but much comes from the fact that FLANKER WAS NOT MADE FOR SUSTAINED SUPERSONIC FLIGHT. Its frame is best for subsonic maneuvering.... and it is indeed BEST in that. I was explained that you can not have both => frame for supersonic sustained flight and matching existing Flanker in subsonic agility. It is true for future Russian 5th gen fighter and it is true for Raptor. You have to give up something more than just more expensive engine for a supercruise.... FRAME |

Hi All,
Sorry to come across as an overly nationalisitc ****, but the first time I heard about monocrystal stuff was when someone got some kind of innovation reward here in the UK as a result of 'inventing' it? Is that true? Was he working for GE, or did GE just get to the patent first, or commercialise it? |
