That had nothing to do with anything. If they were launching on an intercept mission vs Soviet bombers, what do you think we would assume was loaded inside those bombers? They would be brought down by any means necessary. The effects of a small nuclear-tipped AAM would be CONSIDERABLY less than the effects of a nuclear payload.
