Gah more necrophilia. Goddamnit lay off them dead grandmas.
They certainly were, and I see no reason why they shouldn't have been able to, inspite of complete loss of support from the original manufacturer and supplying country (USA). The same goes for all the other equipment and aircraft supplied to Iran in the seventies, albeit with reduced readiness capabilities.
acig.org have done possibly the best research into the matter, here's their list of Iranian air force kills during the war:
Iranian Air-to-Air Victories 1976-1981
Iranian Air-to-Air Victories, 1982-Today
I think that ACIG has some of the best databases around and some really good articles.
That said, I take Tom Coopers Iran data with a huge grain of salt. A lot of the claims in that section cannot be verified and differ from what outside sources say. It seems that he listened to every pilot claim and took it as fact. Even when there was much evidence against the claim.
When Iraqi war records, Saudi AWACs and American AWACs(lots of people kept a wide open set of eyes on that war) logs say that 1 plane was lost but the iranians claimed they shot down 5, Mr Cooper went with 5.
An example, the pilot that claimed to shoot down 4 iraqi planes with 1 phoenix missile.
Its called Tourist Season. So why can't we shoot them?
A lot of Tom's are NOT disputed in interviews with former Iraqi pilots.
The actual claim is three aircraft that went down due a successful Phoenix Missile intercept. I wish I could say that is the strangest thing in aerial warfare.
