No, it's not a bad thing, but you have to admit that the B-52 isn't a bomber, it's a CALCM launch platform that was once a bomber. B-52s will probably end up getting adapted to carry the CALCMs replacement missile and stay in service as long as long range cruise missiles have a role or someone comes up with something that can carry more cruise missiles at similar altitudes and fly in circles for longer amounts of time spending less fuel and needing less maintainance. I don't see such things happening, so there's a good chance it will stay until 2030 or beyond. Blimps are possible and can launch more missiles over a longer time, but are probably more expensive and need more maintainance.

Excerpts from GAO report:

"The B-1B has never reached it's goal of a 75% readiness rate"

"During the two years proceeding the test the US B-1B mission readiness rate averaged about 57%"

"With full spare parts support....a rate of 75% was achieved in the test"

57-75% mission readiness for B-1B, there you have it.

They have had maintenance issues, but my understanding is that they're constantly being retrofitted with newer technologies, and in doing so are not always available. For instance, I'm pretty sure the reason they weren't used in the Gulf war is because they were all being retrofitted to carry more conventional payloads.

And thank you for parking them so close to the highway

My son loves looking at them on "haircut day". The coolest thing was before the airshow when the 22s and 117s were flying around together.
