Reconnisance is probably the only thing the MiG-25 is good at. But still, it is pretty amazing (I say that about any Mach 3 capable aircraft even if they burn out their engines in the process).

No SR-71 was ever lost in combat.
Not that Mig-25 was bad, it certianly deserved the above title. But it was an inferior platform for recce and it was IIRC designed initially to intercept the Blackbird.

Yeah I'm pretty sure the Soviets had the Valkyrie in mind when they turned out the Foxbat. I've read that for a time it caused quite a scare amongst NATO when it first came out, but in the end it did settle into recon quite well. I guess the stress of Mach 3 flight would mean they can only serve for so long though, and new SAMs are probably going to make aircraft that fly such missions without stealth obsolete.

The project which resulted in the MiG-25; E-666 was initially started to counter the SR-71. When the B-70 programme came, then modifications were made to the original design, mainly concerned with extra range, the E-666 basically could take off fly at Mach 3 to 100,000 feet and come down. These changes and moification persisted despite the cancellation of the B-70. It was a better plane as it is.

Because of the XB-70 demise the MiG-25 was never fully developed as an interceptor, but it made a heck of a recon plane. When USSR put their hands on the AN/AWG-9/AIM-54 technology, they derived the MiG-31, as a long range interceptor for the PVO, to be employed in the protection of vast spaces over the Motherland. The most successful jet fighter ever designed evolved from a need to answer a mythical fighter plane that evolved to answer a cancelled bomber. MiG 25 was thought to be a figher. Something that can turn in combat and do all sorts of maneuvers. It turned out to be a high speed missile platform, good in a straight line, not so good anywhere else. |

Did you know that a MiG-25PD recorded the only Iraqi air-to-air kill of the Gulf War? It dropped an F-18C on the first night of the war--then went on to fire another missile at an A-6 and buzz an A-7, all while avoiding escorting F-14s and F-15s.
An isolated incident? How about the single Iraqi Foxbat-E that eluded eight sweeping F-15s then tangled with two EF-111As, firing three missiles at the Ravens and chasing them off station. Unfortunately, the Ravens were supporting an F-15E strike, and the EF-111's retreat led to the loss of one of the Strike Eagles to a SAM. Oh BTW, the Foxbat easily avoided interception and returned safely to base. There's more. When F-15 pilots were fighting for the chance to fly sweeps east of Baghdad late in the war, itching for a chance to get a shot at an Iraqi running for Iran, they weren't expecting the fight that a pair of Foxbats put up. Two Foxbats approached a pair of F-15s, fired missiles before the Eagles could get off shots (the missiles were evaded by the Eagles), then outran those two Eagles, four Sparrows and two Sidewinders fired back at them. Two more Eagles maneuvered to cut the Foxbat's off from their base (four more Eagles tried, but were unable to effect an intercept), and four more Sparrows were expended in vain trying to drop the Foxbats. Not as useless an aircraft as everyone has made it out to be.. |

The Foxbats excelled at their designed role, they were great interceptors.
They however were not great air to air fighters. Against other fighters they generally were at a disadvantage due to their lack of maneuverability and their maximum g-load rating of 2.2 g's (when fully fueled). The airframe itself had an absolute g-load of 4.5'gs before it would breakup. But much like the SR-71 they were phenominal aircraft in their day. And definitately could be considered a success by all accounts. |
