    USAF Active Fighter Squadrons

    This from the CBO:

    http://www.cbo.gov/showdoc.cfm?index=4230&sequence=0

""Section 911 also would require the Air Force to maintain 46 fighter
squadrons in its active force. Currently, the Air Force has 45 active
squadrons. It plans to add one squadron of F/A-22 aircraft in 2004 and
retire one squadron of A-10 aircraft, sustaining a force of 45 squadrons.
CBO assumes that the Air Force would retain the A-10 squadron over the
2004-2008 period to meet the bill's requirement to maintain 46 active
squadrons. CBO estimates that the cost to keep the A-10 squadron in active
service would be about $100 million over the 2004-2008 period."'

Other documents Ive come accross also shows that 46 active squadrons have been the OOB since 1997.

    But I come with 47.

    Exclusive of training squadrons.

Sometimes the U.S military just totally confounds me. Why would you retire a squadron of A-10's?

Currently their a critical asset in Iraq, and for that matter have been critical for ground support in every single ground war you guys have fought lately. In my opinion the airforce has nothing else that performs anywhere near as well in that tasked role.

For crying out loud if the airforce doesn't want them just give them to the army I'm sure they'd be happy to pay for them and take them.

    LOL Easy Canoe Easy LOL

The USAF is upgrading the A-10's even though virtually all are over 20 years old.

    "PRECISON ENGAGEMENT UPGRADE PROGRAM
The Precision Engagement upgrade program for the A-10 includes enhanced precision target engagement capabilities, which will allow the deployment of precision weapons such as JDAM (Joint Direct Attack Munition) and Wind Corrected Munitions Dispenser (WCMD), as well as enabling an extension of the aircraft's service life to 2028. Improvements include: two new multifunction cockpit displays, situational awareness datalinks, digital stores management system, Integrated Flight and Fire Control Computer (IFFCC) from BAE Systems Platform Solutions for automated continuously computed weapons delivery, Litening AT or Sniper XR targeting pod for precision-guided weapons and helmet-mounted sighting system. Lockheed Martin Systems Integration-Owego is prime contractor for the program. First flight of the upgraded A-10C was in January 2005. A contract for Low Rate Initial Production (LRIP) was awarded in March 2005. Up to 125 A-10 aircraft are to be upgraded by 2009. A parallel program will give the A-10 new engine pylons. It is possible that the A-10 engine will also be upgraded if funding is made available.

In February 2004, Lockheed Martin was awarded a contract for the integration of the Sniper XR targeting pod on the A-10 as part of the PE program. Sniper XR includes mid-wave FLIR (forward-looking infrared), dual mode laser, CCD-TV, laser spot tracker and IR marker."

And I havent heard about any A-10 squadron eliminations lately.

But I wish someone would help me with the 46 squadron issue.

Ive tried everything I can think of. This is insane.

You might get a better response over on Snipe's Warthog Territory forum, I hear it's full of Air Force guys.

You know, this is the government we're talking about. Something could easily have been lost in the shuffle, even a fighter squadron.
