    GWB and David Petraeus

Bush Listens to His Man In Iraq- WAPO

Lincoln-Grant. Clemenceau-Foch/Petain. Bush-Petraeus? Few POTUS-types w/ direct relationships w/ field commanders. Lincoln and Clemenceau had notable success though Clemenceau's were relationships managed w/ a deep deal of stress and more than a little antagonism.

An interesting profile. Seems to be a few of them today.

More like Alfred E. Newman and Petraeus. The military end of the surge was hugely successful the political end was an abysmal failure as highlighted by Maliki's incompetence and the failure to make any political progress.
The progress with the Sunni's was happening pre surge and what's missed is WE ARE PAYING THEM AND ARMING THEM. you think they aren't glad to get weaponry when they know the second we start leaving Iranian back elements like the Badr brigade will be in charge?

The U.S. military is in a three legged race. it is muscular, powerful, agile , successful, fearless, loyal and one leg is tied to an iraqi govt that is none of those things so it's forced to move in circles because it's partner wont move it's independent leg. You can lead a horse to water but you can't make it drink and if you try you'll end up worn out avoiding being trampled

You did note that during their questions with Petraeus Obama stood on his soap box and stated I voted against the war from the beginning.

Did you also note that when Petraeus answered the questions he mentioned a "wartime" presidency would await the up and coming canidate.

Guess that rules out two canidates as far as experience goes.)

As to the Wartime President experience. John McCain is a Hero and he served us and suffered for us as a POW but that isn't really a qualification to be Commander in Chief beyond proof he is one tough SOB. Who did better than Roosevelt or Lincoln at getting the job done as Commander in Chief? i don't believe either served. Reluctant warriors are the best kind imo.

From clicking and reading the link what I get from the story is that President Bush is backing the military and allowing them develop intelligence that will allow the US to eventually leave Iraq. It is unfortunate that so many people are hell bent on abandoning the Iraqi's to their own fate which would leave a huge power vacuum for terrorists and dictators to fill.
