Hi all..Great board...just surfed on in
Excellent mix of nationalities..cant promise how often I can visit.
I would like to see if I can enlargen the window view from the perspective of an indigenous native north american. We do not live like 'dances with Wolves', all go to casinos, drink, or live in igloos. But yes, you may be suprised to learn that we do exist. My self though, I am a lowly half breed. Thanks for the welcome all. Encouraging to note the truly international flavour of the board and cosmopolitaness. I like all or most of John Barrys music and certainly the Dances with Wolves Soundtrack is no exception. But one of our scholars was recently interviewed on live TV and he took a phone in caller who remarked that on his travels to New Zealand, many of the people he had met there had off key peceptions of Native Americans about how we live and our history, etc.
So that was one of his comments which I borrowed to repeat here. I am of (Part) Native West Coast INdian ancestry indigenous to the area known as original home to the Tsimshian Tribes . PS Have been to casino's but none Indian owned and operated. They certainly are not ubiquitious here like some places. I have heard stories of how illustrious and grande they can be. I think many Americans would be suprised to learn how different things are here for Native Americans. It has been remarked that although many tribes in the US were decimated by wars and Canada prides itself on not having wars, it appears the slow strangulation method was the weapon of choice instead. Or by default if not choice. Or by process. |

As for Canada, a Metís called Louis Riel did try to do something about it. Attempted to form an alliance of native Canadiens and the Metís to go their own way. Seems the British didn't care for the thought, so they hung him. ![]()

Well lets see : what is a Metis? By strict defintion someone of Cree(native tribe), part Scotch and part French. Go figure.
I am quite happy to see Canada the way it is, can understand historically why things happened (seems some folks from Ottawa traveled all the way West to try and tells some folks which was the wrong way and whch was the right way to homestead) and glad the Metis are earning some recognition and rights. Im pleased to say, I have met at least one of Loius Riels direct desendants. The facial structure similarity was amazing to take note of, and it was quite something to be in the same room watching the film version of The Louis Riel Story in his living room and home. We had borrowed a copy of the local library at his instigation as it seemed as if he would rather pulverise me if not allowed to let him prove his point. Character trait in the genes there? But it was something else to be glancing back from the screen, to his real live great grandson, and back to the screen again. |
