New Guy - Looking...

Discovered this forum quite by accident while researching military history. Major interest for me is finding a sensible, balanced forum exchanging views about many topics. (Was disappointed to see the comments regarding the religion forum.) Am I in the right place?

Mainly, I don't want to go anywhere that might get me introuble with the Hatch Act or other security related hassels since I work for the government.

Any suggestions for newbies?

A lot of the members that post here are also government employees, prior service military, and active military (such as myself.) It's a great, mind-stimulating (sometimes mind-numbing ) website, so I would say: Yes, you are in the right place.

Good people, good debates, intelligent discussions with well-versed gents/ladies from across the globe.

Welcome

The religion forum? I didn't know we had one, and I certainly don't want one. As to whether or not you are in the right place, time will tell - and I'll bet you will know the answer to that before we do.

Any suggestions for newbies? [/quote]

Read the threads from the beginning on the topics you cherrypick. Come on in when you feel confident.

Welcome Windjammer. As Glyn alluded we don't have a religious forum per see and in fact forbid religious proselytizing.
(forum guidelines)
Religion does however crop up regularly within the context of current affairs. You'll find that there are often heated debates as our membership comes not just from various political spectrums but also from all around the world.
As Glyn also suggested, it's good to read through established threads from the start and to expect heated debate from time to time, so it's good to back your arguments with facts wherever possible.
Something I like to mention from time to time is we expect ad hominem attacks to be kept to a minimum, but this is definitely not a knitting circle. It can be a testing board in terms of your beliefs but it's definitely a place to learn and contribute. Enjoy

Welcome to WAB.

You won't get in trouble expressing your political views, here are what you may and may not do:

Active Federal employees may:
  • Be a candidate in a political election in which no candidates represent a political party
  • Register and vote as they choose
  • Assist in Voter Registration Drives
  • Express opinions about candidates and issues
  • Attend fundraisers and contribute money to political organizations and campaigns
  • Volunteer on a campaign
  • Recruit volunteers for a political campaign
  • Participate in activities such as phone banking and precinct walking
  • Display bumper stickers, lawn signs, and other campaign paraphernalia
  • Raise money for their union's political action committee from other union members
  • Run for nonpartisan offices (that is, parties are not listed on the ballot)
  • Volunteer, run for, and hold an office in a local or state political party
Active Federal employees may not:
  • Be a candidate in a political election in which any candidate represents a political party
  • Raise money for a partisan political campaign
  • Allow their names to be used in any fundraising appeal on behalf of a partisan political campaign
  • Participate in a phone bank that is engaged in fundraising for a partisan campaign
  • Raise money for their union's political action committee from persons other than their fellow union members

Thank you for all of your responses!

My comment regarding a "religion forum" was penned after reading Ironduke's response to ExNavyAmerican in the Question & Complaint thread. Since it seems that religious views permeate just about every aspect of local and world politics I wondered how prevalent these issues were in this forum. Since then I have roamed around a bit to get a sense of what this site was all about. I did agree completely with Ironduke's position and generally feel better about having a membership here.

Thanks again for the responses.

Welcome.

Religion may creep in, but it is not the form.
