Project documenting Photography taken by soldiers throughout history - need help!

Hello, I'm new here and hope this is the right place to ask for help/advice.

I’m basically researching the history of war photography specifically photographs which were taken by service men and woman on the front line. Ultimately I'm going to write an essay on the subject and hope that i can find lots of interesting examples with stories attached to the images. So far i have found examples as early as images taken by Australian’s in the Boer war and also a book on Nazi troops who photographed there experiences. I really want my essay to explore all the major wars up until the current Iraq war (which is extensively documented by American and British troops) but I'm worried i wont have enough material to make an interesting piece of work. I haven't yet come across any famous examples and I'm sure there must be some - i just haven’t found them!

It seems like a bit of a tough one as most of the photographs from war’s which are available were obviously taken by professional photographers so I'm hoping someone knows something about the subject and can help me out!

Also if you know of anywhere else where i might be likely to find people who are knowledgeable about this type of thing, it would be a great help to me.

    Thanks for your time, Shaun.

I have a feeling you're going to be asked to introduce yourself in the new members forum.

And I have no pictures to speak of that you probably won't have a hundred of already. (OIF and OEF vet here. Only 25, so I don't have any experience or insider knowledge with previous conflict)

Sorry, didn't realize i needed to introduce myself! I'm a 21 year old student from England. I can't even comprehend being in a war zone. I'm not a fan of violence and conflict but have the up most respect for people who fight for there country. I love my country but feel disillusioned by some of the decisions the government has made over the years. The political parties are so similar in the UK that if i was made to vote, i would pick a name out of a hat! Shaun

    Welcome to WAB, orangegoose
I think the problem you will encounter is the fact that early cameras were bulky and required long exposure times. They were also relatively expensive and most soldiers like to travel light! Still, you never know until you ask. Good luck with your project.

I see somebody's created a site for all those French WWI color photos... I had to dig around on some French government website a few years back to dig 'em up.

    Welcome.

What type of war pictures do you want?

    Only WW II.

Why don't you try some history books. They have some fine pictures.

I have The War in Pictures and I think World War II by Churchil.

Right now, I am away from my country, but when I return, I will check up in case you are interested.

You may PM me since I am not too regular these days out here being on a holiday and may miss your reply in case you write a post on this thread.

corbis is a great site but it's generally by photographers not actual serving members....you can search for any conflict and of course most of the photos are copyrighted by the evil bill gates..

the australian photos you mentioned, where they from here? this could be a good repository for you in that regard...

Hey thanks for all the help guys it's all starting to come together more now.

    ShawnG:

Did you happen to carry a camera whilst you were serving in Iraq and the other places you served? If so (or even if not actually) i would really appreciate being able to interview you on the subject.

    Ironduke:

WWI photo's by troops are something i still need. But that site won't load for me, is it my PC or is it just down in general?

    Ray:

I'm looking for photographs from all wars but which were specifically taken by soldiers.

    ned kelly:

Yes the Australian info i got was from that site, a very interesting read.

Really i think one of my main aims is to do some interviews as i think i would get more out of it than just looking through books and the internet so if there is anyone who could help, it would be much appreciated.

BTW, Should i start a new thread in another part of the forum asking for interviews or do you think people will see it here?

Once again thanks everyone for your help,
    Shaun.

    Welcome to WAB, orangegoose.

Something you might not have learned yet is that members of WAB who's names appear in blue in their posts are current or previous military members of some Nation's military. & glyn is correct, at least for my participation in conflicts. Even tankers like to pack light!

Oh i see, didn't realize. I think there must be a few out there who take pictures however sites like Page 1/89 Under Mars: An online archive of soldiers' photos have lots of images taken in Iraq. I guess cameras are getting smaller as technology goes on so that has probably helped.

Do you think it would be ok if i started a new topic asking for interviews?
