I did develop a taste for the single malt. I brought back several nice Balvenies and Glenmorangies

My favorite is a 15 year old Balvenie finished in a Port cask. Great nose...

Sgt-Maj,

You have a distinguished palette. Mr Lukins prefers a 12 year Glenlivet. I think so does Parihaka. Mr Angel prefers the 14 year Glenmorangie. I have in my collection a 15 year Lagavullen and a 15 year Oban though I do keep a few 12 year Glenfiddich and Lagavullen just for the bed time zip. There are a few odd opened Dalhwinnies and Glenlivet but I prefer the stronger more peaty scotch though I am in the mood for a smooth finish a few times.

A 15 yr single barrel Balvenie starts its life off in Oak casks, then transfered to Port casks. Is it the 40% or the 47%?. The 15yr Port cask finished is a rare beasty and is usually reserved for the 10 and 21yr old. Yours must be the '93, that has a honey finish which OoE would not enjoy. As he is a hearty drinker and likes the taste of the earth and the peat flavour. As for Tankie, he would drink a swamp filtered through a Marines jock strap so it would be lost on him

It's a 1991.

The label reads:
"the vanilla honeyed spiciness of a number of traditional whisky casks of The Balvenie distilled in nineteen ninety one meant that they were considered perfect by The Balvenie Malt Master for further maturation in Port casks to create a single malt that is rich, fruity and long in finish.

Then it lists the casks and what they do, then:
Maturation:
American Oak
Portugese Oak

Limited Release bottled in 2005.

It is a 40%.

Best part, it was a gift. The tradition at the gunnery school is that when you teach a Platoon Leader's course, if they think you were a decent instructor, they take you out at the end of the course and try to drink you under the table, unsuccessfully....Then they present you with a bottle of decent spirits.

I am saving this one for after Iraq.

If anyone is heading up to Royal Mile Whiskys, I would love to try a vintage cask 1968, or 21 year old Port Wood. I could tolerate a Single Barrel or a Founder's Reserve....

Tankerguy,

Forgive my lack of familiarity with your system but with 20 years in, you would've been at least a Company Sergeant-Major in my army and hence, the Sgt-Maj title fits.

Now, this being said, I know you thought you joined a World Affairs Board with some military guys but this subject is far more important.

If you ever get your butt up to the Ottawa area, I've got 4 bottles of scotch (I think I will put aside the Oban, the Lagavullen, the Glenmorangie, and the Talasker). No way in hell will I allow a tanker NCM to outdrink an engr Officer.

Officer of Engineers,

I may have to make a trip to the Great White North. I grew up not too far removed from Canada. About 1.5 hrs. in a car from Toledo to Windsor. I used to appreciate the lower drink age in my younger years.
