Salam, greetings, namaste, shahlom :-)

Hello people here at WAB

Spent a long time at PDF (and will continue to and a short time at IRDF and now looking to spend a long time here at WAB

What I am looking forward to is some good objective debates (non-BS) about world affairs

I am born and raised in Denmark but my parents are from Pakistan, thats part of the reason for why I especially love these to countries (not always the laws or governments etc. etc. but the countries, the people and the cultures (This doesn't mean that I suddenly without reason hate other people etc. etc.)

Just wanted to introduce myself.

Valkommen, dear Shahid.

I used to live in that bigger, better country just to the east of you

Me and my father used to cross the Oresund into Helsingor to buy trunkloads of beer (in Sweden there is monopoly on the stuff, imagine 1-2 shops in every city ).

How is Denmark by now?

Welcome aboard. Hope you have some fun here.

Is 'Shahid' your given name, or a screen name?

Welcome to WAB shahid_2dk. Denmark is one of my favourite countries. When based in Germany I often took short breaks in Copenhagen in addition to joint exercises with the Danish services.

Thanks. I've also heard it translated as 'martyr'. As in, " a martyr".

These days I do as little as possible! I served in the RAF and the Army in an unspectacular career. I was lucky enough to be a pilot in both services and also a member of the worlds first ever tank regiment (the 1st Royal Tank Regiment).

Welcome.

Bluesman,

Shahid in Arabic means a Witness.
Quote:

Question: What does the term shaheed in Islamic literature truly represent? Are all those die in the holy wars and the innocent people killed in some accidents or are murdered Shaheed? I am really confused. Please enlighten me on this issue and also explain what appens to a shaheed after his or her death.

Answer: The word Shaheed connotes ones who bears witness to a certain fact. It implies martyrs as they live their lives bearing witness of the truth and spare nothing to remain steadfast in the way of their Lord even their lives. The basic thing that qualifies one to the position is this conviction. This conviction varies in different individuals raising them to different stages. Therefore, we cannot draw a line to distinguish between their degrees.

Those who die in accidents or killed innocent may get some reward from the Almighty but accidentally being killed in a war by the enemy does not raise one to the status of Shaheed. The basic criteria are living the life of submission to God and sacrificing all in His way even life if need be.

The Holy Qur’an has informed us that those who lived life of submission before God and sacrifice their lives necessarily merit success in the Hereafter and are rewarded right from their death. It says:

Quote:
Think not of those, who are slain in the way of Allah, as dead. Nay, they are living. With their Lord they have provision. (3:169)
This brief information tells that they are not dead like others rather they are being rewarded. This treatment is special for the martyrs, the Messengers, the Prophets (sws), and other pious people who lived lives of virtue and rightness. They will be rewarded right after death. The Holy Qur’an does not tell us the nature of this life. This falls within the matters we cannot fully comprehend like most of the matters regarding the hereafter. We only know that they will be experiencing life and will be rewarded by their Lord and while the nature of this reward cannot be comprehended.
Meaning of the Term Shaheed

Per Wikipedia:
Quote:
Shaheed (Arabic: شَهيد šahīd, plural: شُهَداء šuhadā) is a religious term in Islam, that literally means "witness". It is a title that is given to a Muslim after his death, if he died during the fulfillment of a religious commandment, or during a war for the religion. In addition to its religious connotation, the term is also commonly used in the Indian subcontinent by Hindus and Sikhs as the equivalent of martyr. Arab Christians use the term to describe persons killed on duty or during wars. In this case, the term equals the term martyr.

The shaheed is considered as one whose place in Paradise is promised, according to the verse in the Qur'an.

“ Think not of those who are slain in Allah's way as dead. Nay, they live, finding their sustenance in the presence of their Lord; „
—Qur'an, 2:214

A martyrdom operation is a military or an offensive attack in which the attacker is expected to die; most often a suicide bombing. The term is used by armed Muslim militants, or other similar or related groups. Islamist militants use this term as they do not see their attacks as an act of suicide, which is prohibited by Islam. While most combat involves a chance of death, a "martyrdom operation" implies a deliberate act of self-sacrificial suicide. The term is a neologism.
