Military urban legends

I stumbled upon this forum as a result of a link to one of my blog articles, and am finding it fascinating. I am a South African writer who also runs a technology and telecoms market research company, but am rediscovering my writing roots through my blogs. The one I hope World Affairs Board members will find of interest is an urban legends blog called "Legends from a Small Country". I've written several books on the topic, and am updating the old legends as well as exploring new ones. I hope members of the forum will be willing and able to share military urban legends when the mood or myth strikes them. The latest (old) one on my blog is entitled "Arms, disarmament and urban legends" (you can read it here). Hope you enjoy it.

Welcome to the WAB Art2!

I remember one story about a captured terr who had a blood pressure cuff put on his arm prior to questioning. He was then told if didn't answer the questions satisfactorily the cuff would blow his arm off. Since he had never seen a blood pressure cuff much less a doctor he believed them and when they started to pump it up he told them everything they wanted.

Thanks so much to everyone for the warm greetings. It feels so much like the spirit of the earlier Internet, which may have been peopled by hard-bitten cynics, but never gave off a jaded aura. As Shamus says, it's a very eclectic group, and therein lies its appeal and fascination.

Thanks for the Brownie points, Glyn - it's a symptom of our times that someone can get kudos for simply following basic etiquette!

sappersgt, that urban legend is an interesting variation on the old American police legend about the colander that is put on a suspect's head and "connected" to a photocopier. The suspect believes it's lie detector, and confesses.
