No! Do not ignore a counter-point. That is the worst thing you can do on this board. However,

1) Can you rationalize that counter-point to your original beliefs?
2) Are you wrong on just this one point or your entire belief?
3) You may be wrong but is our argument right or are we both wrong ... or are we both right?

This board is made of combat veterans from across the world. We do not agree with each other and we do not understand each other that well but we do respect each other and we do challenge each other.

You've gotten a taste of that from the USAF Master-Sergeant Bluesman, a 20 year+ vet. On this board, you have a host of other military professionals who will tell you that your arguments is worth squat and they will tell you why, including me.

Your job is to think things through.

Rammer:

You're getting good advice on your first day here, more than I got for sure.

Let me suggest that you now take any substantive material or debating points you wish to post and find the appropriate thread for them. This is an introductory thread and whatever you post here besides personal stuff isn't going to get all the attention it deserves...there are hundreds of members and they don't all tender welcoming messages...Cheers

I meant to say that i will not ignore a counterpoint willing.

I know this does not mean anything, but my Father is a combat vet.

He was a Captain in the IDF, but was there for only four years.

He fought in the First Lebanon War: he was part of the invasion force in 1980, being stationed there for two years.

I applaud everyone who has fought for their country. I am contemplating doing the same, by joining the IDF. However, I am only 16, and I need to think this through.

On a side note: How do I edit my signature and other things like that.

Excellent pointers. How often have we seen someone go mute after a decisive counterpoint has been delivered.

I am sure there are many combat vets here, but unless you count sitting in the barracks in Gitmo in 1962 listening to gunshots as the Cuban Army shot civilians trying to climb the fence to freedom as combat, I must sadly except myself from your statement that this board is made up of combat vets. I sense you didn't mean all of us, but just in case, I might as well fess up.

Start by reading the FAQ, if that doesn't help send an IM to a moderator (find one and then click on their ID and send message).

Sir, I am not thinking about getting laid;I don't even have a girlfriend.

I am much more mature than most 16 year olds. There are more important things in life than sex, money, and booze.

I wouldn't lie about something like that; I know how many vets get annoyed by people who lie about serving.

Is not okay for a 16 year old to think more than one day ahead of his life?

And your parents? And my wife and daughter? As with almost everyone else here who has wife and child/children? Nothing wrong in accepting biology (and btw, son, I am going to give you the perfect excuse -"What do you expect? I'm a Man.")

Son, I was not thinking about flag and country when I proposed to my wife

Sir, I was not trying to deny biology; just trying to defend myself as not being a liar, that is all.

Wrong choice of words on my part, Son, but if you can ignore a pretty blond's smile, you're a better man than I was.

Bah, you don't need one. Things'd get boring. Variety is the spice of life.
