Greetings
'twas referred this way by a link from the blog "Information Dissimenation".
Presently located in northern VA (aka "occupied territory") working in defense. Retired as a Captain (USN) and former Naval Flight Officer with 3500+ hours and 551 traps in the E-2C Hawkeye. Also served as a squadron CO and CVN navigator and am a 9/11 survivor of the strike on the Pentagon. Write extensively on those experiences as well as current pol-mil issues (especially naval, aviation and missile defense matters) over at my blog. Very much looking forward to joining the discussions on this august forum.

Original concept had a folding vertical tail (like the S-3 ended up with) but it was viewed as too impractical. When they went for the multiple vertical fins, it was originally just the three, with the middle offset (not centerline like the Mohawk - Grumman learned their lesson). Navy said no dice, Grumman added a fiberglass fin and the rest is history. I can personally attest to the flying characteristics of the a/c with one of the inboard fins missing too, btw...

Thanks and very much glad to be aboard.
Re. the picture - quite a feat for the Liberty Bells (VAW-115) maint dept to get all 5 airborne (harder than some may think, well, at least it was in my day with spares shortages and all...). 'tis with a sad note I would add that one of the crewmembers lost in the E-2 crash off USS Truman last week had come from VAW-115 to be an instructor pilot. Sad times for their families and squadronmates @ VAW-120... -SJS |
