Aloha
Well.. I've made a few posts, hope that they have been informative in the navy side of the forum..
To let you all know where I'm coming from.. I joined the Navy in 1991 as a Data Systems Technician, and was stationed on the USS Essex LHD 2 as a Computer Perif (UYK-43 technician) since I was the first new Sailor to get stationed on her that was a DS since comissioning, I worked on the UYK-43's for approx 6 months then was assigned to JOTS as a maintenance tech.. I was sent to school for JOTS operator then a couple years later for JMCIS Maintenance.. (have both NEC's to both operate and maintain it) My next duty station was a mobile C4I command out of Hawaii.. We were assigned to CINCPACFLT, but the unit was owned by USCINCPAC, talk about brass, two 4 star Admirals owning you.. We would deploy on a moments notice anywhere in the pacific theater, providing NIPRNET, SIPRNET, DSN(military telephone service) POTS (plain old telephone service) and VTC capability to whom ever we were supportin, be it a 3 star general or admiral, or a civilian contigent that needed a communications outfit. We were able to load up our 4 HMMWV's and 4 trailers and all our personnel in one C-17, C5 or C141 or 3 C130's and were ready to go on a 4 hour tether, unless the entire command was stood down for something like holiday leave. One of my best memories is when I re-enlisted on the re-enlistement deck(across from the surrender deck) on the USS Missouri on Oct 2 1999. That's the day I went from a DS2 to a FC2.. Next I was assigned to Commander Patrol and Reconnissance Squadron 10 out of Whidbey Island Washington. I was assigned there to maintain computers, but a black shoe in a brown shoe navy was strange.. I did that for 14 months and was the LPO of the ADP shop for awhile, but I missed being "haze grey and underway" so I terminated Shore duty and got a billet as a FC1 on the PRECOM Momsen.. (precomissioning) I went to San Diego for the PRECOMDET, and attended ATWCS (Advance Tomahawk Weapons Control System) school till from late May 03 through Oct 03 when I went to the PRECOMUNIT Momsen in Bath Maine. We moved onboard the Momsen in May 04 and sailed away in July 04. Comissioning was Sep 04 in Florida, and our homeport is in Everett Washington. On board here, I'm one of 7 Tomahawk technicians, that if called upon will program and launch the US's pre-eminient strike weapon, the Tomahawk Cruise Missile.. "Landscape Management and Population Control" at it's finest.. Something that was wrote up in the local paper was how many people transfered from the decomissioned USS Foster and USS Fife and other local commands to the Momsen, over 1/2 the crew had been stationed in Washington at some time in their carreer and wanted to get back or stay in Washington. We (the Momsen) deployed to the southern Philippines in support of OEFP (Operation Enduring Freedom, Philippines) in the US's support of the Philippine governments war on their home grown Islamic Fundementalists in Mindinao and the other smaller islands that compromise the Sulu archapeligo (Jolo, Tawi-tawi and Basilan islands are the major ones in this chain) I've always been very interested in the Navy, weapons systems, aircraft, etc.. other interests are hunting, fishing and cars, the faster the better (unless it comes to 4x4's and they are just as fun) well.. hope that I havn't bored anyone, but now you know my past history.. (oh yeah, my dad was in the Navy from 61-64 and I lvoed hearing the stories he had of the Amphib Navy, He was a MR3 onboard the USS Bexar APA-237 for 2 years then did 2 years in Taipei Taiwan as part of the MAAG Taiwan "military advise and assistance group") |

Aloha,
What Gyln is conveying that there are many on this Board, who are not too well conversant with the acronyms that are used by the US military. I, for one, was quite foggy about them. In fact, I keep telling the Colonel (OoE), who is a Super Moderator, to keep the acronyms low; or the first time it is used, the full form is added in brackets. (xxxx) I am sure you will have a whale of a time out here on WAB! Welcome again! |
