But tanks are also a prime target. An enemy with an RPG on his shoulder would rather aim at a tank than a Hummvee or a deuce-and-a-half full of MRE's. Since we already have pilotless "combat" aircraft (though not really fighters - yet), getting the human crew out of the tank and operating it from something like a video arcade console is the next step up. The time is coming, soon, that all combat aircraft and close-in ground fighting vehicles will actually be remotely controlled (perhaps SELF controlled in some cases) robots. Now, if they only duplicate an Infantryman.

The idea of building an exo-skeleton suit with hydraulic power units in the joints has been around a very, very long time. Popular Mechanics magazine had an article on it back in the 50's or 60's showing a photo of a wood mock up to demonstrate manueverability and an artist's rendering of a mechanic (wearing a hard hat) carrying a V-8 engine block with one hand like a tray of beers.
But technology has had to catch up. There was also the law of the conservation of energy that had to be considered. If you mechanically enhanced a joint to be super strong, it also becomes super SLOW. Hydraulics are a different thing, but require a pump for pressure, special rotating units for joints like elbows, shoulders, wrists, hips, knees and ankles and a big roll of paper towels to clean up after all the gasket leaks. |

With full automatisation of the battlefield and ever powerful weapons systems tanks can share the fate of battleships. What is the meaning of tons of armor if it cannot defeat opposing warhead? Today even an advanced hand held rpg can disable a MBT, and the tanks with AI can calculate a firing solution and fire a much more powerful warhead in miliseconds in the future. I believe future battles will be between howercraft like fast robots trying to shoot each other first :D

Also, how susceptible is this system to EMPs? (I know that no one would dare use an X-Ray flux EMP, but still...)
