Pictures from Turkey's National Tank Program

Hello forumers,

I have managed to get fotos of one of the Turkish Designs for it's National MBT project.....

I don't think this will win the MBT contest but it shows atleast what the Turkish Armed Forces is thinking to make.

The Turkish Armed Forces (TAF) and the Turkish Military Procurement Department (SSM) invited Prof. Oguz Eratac of Mimar Sinan University, Turkey to provide a detailed version of his design after they (TAF and SSM) liked his initial design, so much. He has infact now been invited to become part of the MBT design team at Otokar A.S.

His design has also been featured in the Turkish Armed Forces Magazine.

I am eager to see the final design, as I honestly didn't believe they could come up with an original design....

He needs to reduces that weight down from 65 tonnes. 45MPH and a 300 mile range looks optimistic. 120mm Main Armament is fine, 12.5mm co-ax?. Not a lot of episcopes on the Turret, a bit sparse maybe? Lets see what it ends up like in 5yrs time. I'm afraid "perdy" don't win wars

It looks a formidable piece of equipment. The FCS sounds top drawer.

Am no do not expect Turkey's MBT to be anything like the Korean K2. Here is the official government data which proves this (below).

There was speculation by some media organisations that Turkey will opt for the Korean K2 after many Korean companies won many Turkish Government tenders. However, the story of the MBT is different....

Milli Tank Üretim Projesi (Turkish National Tank Program)

MİTÜP is the official name of the Turkish national main battle tank program. The project was initiated with an agreement signed between Otokar and the Undersecretariat for Defense Industries of the Republic of Turkey (SSM) on March 30, 2007; when the Defense Industries Executive Committee (SSIK), chaired by Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, awarded a contract worth approximately $500 million to Otokar for the indegenous design and development of 4 prototypes of a new national Main Battle Tank. This will be Turkey's first MBT development program since 1943, when prototypes of a Turkish national tank were produced in the city of Kırıkkale, but never reached full-scale mass production, due to cheap alternatives from European companies. However, in line with Ankara's new National Defence Doctrine, it intends to be a developer of Defence Technology not a consumer. Ankara has made it clear on various occasions that they will only approve of either full-technology transfer offers or full indegenous designs.

Turkey has thus chosen Otokar, a Turkish company owned by Istanbul-based Koç Holding to design, develop and mass produce Turkey's new class MBT. It is envisaged that the only thing foreign in Turkey's MBT will be the licenced production of the engine.

ASELSAN has already developed the Tank's Fire Control System and all the electronics required for the MBT. See the systems at following webpages:
Aselsan.com.tr - VOLKAN Fire Control System
Aselsan.com.tr - Digital Tank /Vehicular Intercommunication System
Aselsan.com.tr - EAGLEEYE - Fire Control Sighting System

MKEK of Turkey has also already developed the 120mm smootbore turret and also the required munition production line. Again, the turret is also the product of Israeli support and tech transfer for the Sabra modernization program. Pictures of the MKEK turret production plant also attached below.
Sabra (tank) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
MKEK

ROKETSAN of Turkey, has also developed a new type of classified Explosive Reactive Armour (ERA).
Air Force Technology - Roketsan - Rockets and Missiles

ROKETSAN had previously teamed up with its Israeli counterparts in accordance with a contractual agreement between Turkey and Israel in relation to the modernization of Turkey's M60 MBT to Sabra level. Part of the Sabra Tank Modernization program was that Israel would transfer its Merkava 4 Armour technology to Turkey. Well, this was completed last year....

ROKETSAN had also concluded agreements with several Pakistani firms which was involved in the design and production of the Al Khalid MBT. These firms have been providing Turkey with technological support for Advanced Passive Armor systems. Pakistan in turn had obtained this technology from French firms which manufacture the Leclerc MBT and incorporated it in the Al Khalid MBT.

ROKETSAN has also ongoing agreements with several Turkish Universities and TUBITAK regarding Boron Ceramic Armour technology.

Hence, as a result of the above cooperation and experience ROKETSAN was able to further develop and refine the armour technology it had acquired through skillful "co-production agreements" to the Turkish MBT program.

Co-operation with Korea's Hyundai Rotem Company:
It must be noted that the Turkish Government has approved the above Korean Company to provide tecnological support for the Turkish MBT's Track system.

The following are further government anouncments regarding the project:

The tank is planned to have a 120-mm gun and can protect themselves from chemical, biological and radioactive attacks. Their maximum speed is 70 kilometers per hour, courtesy of a 1500-horsepower engine, and they can function under 4.1 meters of water. It will benefit from indigenous design and armor technology of K2 Black Panther thanks to the aggrement with South Korea. The final decision about the tank's engine is not clear. The candidates are German MTU Friedrichshafen or South Korean's future engine which is under development, currently.

So not exactly "Turkish". There is nothing wrong with choosing what is deemed to be the best technology around at the present time

I do still find it very interesting the development of MBT's, simply due to my back ground, the the battle field is continually evolving especially in the area of ATGW which are very much concentrating on the The tank's most vulnerable spot, the top, ....these top attack capable ATGW sighted in well orchestrated matrix's and in sufficient numbers are seriously able to curtail the movement and effectiveness of the MBT

Top Attack ATGW

Sergeant Major,

Sounds like an immediate suppression mission to me. If you've a pre-planned target that's prioritized near that ATGW bad-boy, I'll have a round there in 30 seconds. Good adjustment out of that and we'll have steel on target by the second round.

Dreadnought.
