Friends, I do see some maneuver benefit in Cavalry formations for the M3.
In the present GWOT however the M113 family is probably just as well appointed for operations in the scope of a multi-terrained counter terror campaign. As an aside SOP usually renders the top two weapons system on the Bradleys outside of some of the use of force guidance so the vehicle is treated as an overkill/reserve implement. I feel the M113 is today one of the most underexploited vehicles/weapons platforms. It is ironically well exploited by others such as our allies & even civilian law enforcement.

The M113 does CASEVAC, comms and Maintenance well these days...that is about it. Are seriously saying that the M2s are NOT using their 25mm when needed?

According to US Army field manual 3-21-71, a Bradley takes three crews to operate and carries seven passangers. Six troops sit in the main passanger compartment, but one more can fit in small space behind the driver seat, back to back to the driver. Bradlies do not swim, at least not without a Rudy Goldberg device.

1. The M2, M2A1(-), and M2A1 all could swim. I personally swam one as a company comamnder. With the M2A2 ODS and on, the Army got smart and dropped the firing port weapons (THANK GOD!!!!!) and added additional armor. It was recognized that since we were no longer going to have to fight the Great War III in Europe the swim requirement was dropped from the MENS.
2. The Army has procured 7 BCTs worth of Strykers...that's it. No more planned. The M1206 ICV will replace the M2. https://www.fcs.army.mil/systems/icv/index.html 3. Drink beer instead of chocalate milk...lets you think more clearly. |

![]() And your second statement was exactly what the Bradley was designed for: Crew survivability at the expense of the vehicle. |
