You'd be saddened to see the percentage of soldiers who never played baseball nowadays. Some of the poor team leaders and squad leaders would have to spend hours trying to teach some of the soldiers how to throw the grenade to the 35m target during EIB.

In my schooldays 'Throwing the cricket ball' was a contest to see who could throw the farthest. It was quite obvious that it was really intended to prime people to hurl grenades in the services.

Qualifications are great but, point shooting techniques - the shooting methodology actually useful in combat (day/night) needs to be taught more widely to those who are not of combat-arms specialties (and even some who are

) (e.g. quick-sighting, quick-shooting, etc.). My .02.

we were tought to throw grenades (700gramms) in school gym class, iirc 30m was passing throw.
we also had a test on at granade, 1.2 kg, had to hit tank siluette, and duck, distance was 10-15m, for at, unlike 700g. granade(both dummy grenades) accuracy was reqired.

Yes, I agree, but the principles of marksmanship must be taught and then exercised. This must be continually refreshed as shooting is a perishable skill. No sense teaching point shooting techniques if you can't hit anything beyond 25m.

The USMC realized that point shooting techniques are necessary and came up with the Enhanced Marksmanship Program as an interim solution. Incorporating this type of shoot into the qualification week is the final result.

I find that very interesting that it was taught in HS.

You are correct it is a perishable skill. The unit I was in constantly spent time on the range including (point shooting skills) taping over the front sights of the Car-15/ M-16.

Absolutely agreed. I did not mean to imply that basic shooting techniques need not be taught rather, in addition to qual. point shooting needs to be practiced a lot more (speaking with somewhat outdated frame of reference).

Great practice! Much more to my liking then qual. week.
