The Hague - The Defense Department has purchased 10 additional bushmasters, necessary as replacements, to use for practice, and to have in reserve. They will cost 8.5 million euros, said the Secretary of Defense.
Five bushmasters will fill the gap in Uruzgan after the loss of two bushmasters and one patria. Two other bushmasters were heavily damaged.
Van der Knaap writes that the operational security of Task Force Uruzgan will be hindered without these new vehicles. To keep patrols and convoys running these vehicles need to be urgently replaced.
The secretary wants to keep 4 vehicles in reserve because he expects that more vehicles will be lost in the future. One remains in the Netherlands for training purposes. Because of the intensive use of the vehicles extra soldiers must be trained to decrease the burden on drivers in theatre.
These ten follow the 25 that were bought by defense last year.
