I suppose that's how it goes. I doubt the RAF would be spending their limited cash on the Gunners if they saw no value in keeping them, especially since they got stung for something like 7000 redundancies not long ago.

Will do, at present I'm going for Infantryman with The Rifles, with the Royal Irish being my second preference. By the sounds of it, if I pass Selection then that's where I'll end up, currently I have my heart set on either the 1st Battalion or the 5th Battalion, but in any event that's a long way off.

Im new to this site and only joined because of the total rubbish being said about my Regiment. I have been in the RAF Regiment for 20 years and i think i should set the record straight about the utter nonsence being said.
Firstly we are trained to be Combat Infantry Soldiers, our basic training is 27 weeks long, all our training is from the British Army pamphlets and all our Wpn training is under the control of a Army WO1 Weapon Instructor. After basic training our Gunners train to be either SF Machine Gunners, Para, 81mm Mortars, CBRN, Dispatch Riders and many more. Unlike the Blue Air Force as we call them, the RAF Regt MUST pass pre Para selection(P company) before they do the Jumps course at Brize Norton. Our role is Force Protection around our Forward Operating Bases which means we do all our work outside the Airfield in the form of aggresive patrolling in order to dominate the ground, prevent Insurgent attacks and allow our aircraft to operate, this role as resulted in many contacts with the enemy in both Iraq and Afghan. We are not front line troops as that is not our role, however we have to be Infantry trained to do our job and often get sent to support Army Inf units. We do not guard Airfields, that is the RAF Police job. If it wasnt for the RAF Regiment the Aircraft bringing in the Army to theatre and more importantly taking them back home again wouldnt be able to operate. We are not REMFs, try telling that to the 8 RAF REGIMENT Gunners who have been killed in action in the last 6 months, plus the 2 Military Cross's, several Mention in dispatches and Queens Comendations for Bravery that have been awarded. We are good at our job and have the utmost respect for the Army and Marines all we ask for is a little back. |

rockape87, I mean no disrespect my friend/sir, however I suggest you locate your sense of humour and remove it from it's packaging. Two days at the ADSC taught me that slagging eachother off is an integral part of Military life, I would think 27 weeks of training would make one more than used to it.

Having read threads on the subject of the RAF Regt it strikes me that the majority of the writers suffer from severe inferiority disorders. Unable to grasp even a small inkling of military operations; a tag worrying in today's world. Tigger cs 30 is a case in hand, a man who it would appear spent his life in a tank - just what do you know apart from not roughing it. The Army always made me smile when they came on to RAF Stations, bigging it up as if the RAF had never seen the Army up close before, you could here the yawns for miles. The RM never did because they didn't have to & I have sunk many a tin with them. The Paras, well they were just pathetic in their attempts to 'impress'. These writers however all have one thing in common, they 'heard' they 'have a mate who said' there is a 'rumour' but never anything specific. I have seen the Army in action, take GW1, the Army's NBC drills and eqpt were abysmal to the point that Winterbourne Gunner had to go out to salvage the situation. In their report they conceded the RAF were light years ahead and this set against 'Line Infantry'. There are complete idiots, as these thread demonstrate, in all areas on the military and those in glass houses should not throw stones. The RAF Regt has a massive allegiance towards each other regardless of rank , train hard and have shown their metal in action both in Iraq and Afgan but never mentioned by the so called 'in the know' types in these threads, I wonder why? Now lets see who has a sense of humour failure?
