my guess would be that it is supposed to fit into tight streets which would be too small for normal vehicles

Buffel was customised Unimog AFAIK and the first of S.Africas mine-proof family. I´ve seen a pic. of it in Sri Lanka´s forces too.

Yep, S Africans bin using that type of vehicle for a while now, not sure how effective it is against road mines or road side IEDs, talkig of ugly vehicles when serving in Cyprus in 75, at PAPHOS, with the UN, we had a 3 ton open cabbed vehicle, that had been altered somewhat, Dave do you recall it, I have got a pic of it somewhere, will try and fiddle about and stick it on here
