Read a lot of interesting stuff on Russian forums about these. Tor M1 is much more capable and expensive that Tunguska, which is more anti-helo defense. Both are relativelly short range... around 5km effective and max range of Tor-M1 is 12km. Tor-M1 can shoot unguided bombs and even Grad BM-21 shells..... two channels... so it can attack two targets with two missiles fired on each. It can be used against CM on their terminal stage.....

I would love to hear comparison of Tor-M1 with its western peers....

You won't hear much from the American hardware scene. We don't have any equivalent items. We rely on our airforce.

On the order of Russian air defenses my favorite long range SAM is the S300 family.

High mobility,long range fast maeuevrable high altitude missiles,specialized low level surveillance and air search radars with masts to improve radar horizon and high ECCM capabilities.

Not too big of a fan of the S300V though.

Well as far as I heard, Tor M1 was specifically build to protect armored columns against weapons fired from aircrafts. It can shoot down aircrafts and helicopters too but with the high resolution phased array its primary target is actually the ordinance fired from the enemy aircraft. I've heard that the, during the NATO air strikes in Kosovo, Serbs actually were able to shoot down Mavericks with SA-7 Grail. It appeared that the obsolete IR head which was too sensitive and therefore easy to jam warhead, was good enough to hit Mavericks...But again that could be just the rumor.

On each? Are you sure? Two channels means two missiles, that must be so, as one channel - one missile. Do not mislead our American friends.

Its to complete their integrated Air defences system, you cant just have all Long/Medium range SAMs Its can be used to engage cruise missiles, low flying aircraft and etc that Long/Medium Range SAMs can't.

Mission
The Tor-M1 air defence missile system is designed to protect ground troops and installations from attacks of air attack assets, especially precision-guided weapons, as well as fixed- and rotary-wing aircraft, cruise missiles and remotely piloted vehicles.
The Tor-M1 is a state-of-the-art mobile allweather short-range ADMS with radar, optical and computer systems, launchers, surface-to air missiles and power supply units on board the combat vehicle. It can operate autonomously launching missiles on the move from short halts. The ADMS is highly immune to both active and passive ECM. Maximum automation of operation thanks to the use of a high-speed digital computer, coupled with the vertical launch and subsequent gas-dynamic declination (inclination) of the missile towards the target, ensure minimum reaction time possible. Automated control for the Tor-M1 ADMS battery is provided by the 9S737M unified battery command post.

Composition
The Tor-M1 ADMS includes combat, technical and auxiliary assets.
Typical combat assets include:
• up to four 9A331-1 CVs with two SAM modules on each;
• 9M334 missile modules with four 9M331 missiles in each;
• 9S737M battery command post.
Technical assets include:
• maintenance assets for the ADM system and its vehicles;
• missiles loading/unloading, storage and transportation facilities with rigging equipment;
• ADMS group set of spare parts, tools and accessories.
Auxiliary assets comprise 9F678 selfcontained simulator for CV operators. Each CV is equipped with life-support equipment, navigation and mission recording means. The CV onboard equipment can be mounted on either tracked or wheeled chassis, or in container. The Tor-M1 ADMS can be shipped by all transportation means, including aircraft.
