Seen it demo'd on Sailsbury Plain once, but that's as close as I've ever got to it. Having said that, I was talking to the Plt Comd afterwards (he used to be in my TA unit, before going regular) and he seemed pretty happy with it.
Didn't seem to have problems pulling a Chally 2 about, complete with pirate flags on the CRARRV.

"Ummm" ( ) I don't recall seeing a Cent' AVLB, only the Cent AVRE ("Dustbin chucker"), if my memory serves me right the only AVLB' I recall were Chieftan variants. But then my memory has been addled through using my mobile (cell) phone

Glyn, Dave & Tankie would have fonder memories I would think on account they are old and senile

Royal Engineers Museum - Articles - Assault bridging and equipment

Centurion 5 AVRE 165

FV4205 Chieftain AVLB

And finally this

Shir 1 and Khalid

led to this

Challenger 1

and then this

Army Technology - Challenger 2 - Main Battle Tank

Err... I was responding to the post about the Cent ARV (i.e. Armoured Recovery Vehicle - the REME version).

Something like one of these, I presume: Centurion ARV Mk. II - Danish Army Vehicles Homepage

I think I confused the issue when I brought in the ARV when we were talking about AVLB' & AVRE's.

When I was in the 1st of Track with Centurions and Conquerors, let me assure you the REs had bridging Cents as well as the Cent AVREs. To add to your store of knowledge I should add that there were BARVs as well (Beach Arm'd Recovery Vehs) and if I remember correctly the Regt had at least one in Aden.

Boy but the Brits got themselves some shiny new toys! I'm amazed to say the least at it. And to quote one of my favourite lines from one of my favourite movies:

"When you refer to Bailey crap I take it you mean that glorious, precision-made, British-built bridge which is the envy of the civilized world?"

Where they wise enough to put armament on these? I've always liked the idea of putting a shortbarreled howitzer and a couple of mg's in a turret on engererring tanks that way when not shoving dirt they can support infantry and or can fight back if clearing mines under fire.

Just about everything will have a couple of GPMGs on it, but they aren't likely to have anything heavier. After all, their job is engineering and if they get involved in the fighting something has gone wrong. Shame really as the demolition gun on the old Churchill/Centurion AVREs was a nice bit of kit if rather limited in application.
