snipers are not only sharpshooters, shooting only makes maybe 10% of his job, they have to do much more than shoot, they need to be experts, in concealment, stealth, navigation, survival, comunication. they need to be invisible, unheard, and still do some shooting without being spoted. the best sniper rifle is the one that lets them do all that, try to conceal a blast from 50 bmg, posible, but at what cost, having 50 lb , 6ft rifle to carry around, i don't think it's a right choice, any good bolt action hunting rifle in caliber bigger than 7,62 will be good enough for almost any sniper, nobody needs .50cal. round to kill a human, it's overkill, ar type rifle is a great rifle for the range, a sniper might be hiding in water, dirt, snow, sand, for days, i don't think ar type will be a good choice for that. m 14 much better, for that. in the right hands even shitty svd can be a good choice, rifle is the tool, a sniper is its master, he is the one who makes things happen.

if i had to make one, i'd go with 338 wsm round, bull barrel, straight pull bolt, kevlar adjustable stock, glass beded, all metal is stainless steel, and a folding bipod .

Although, I imagine morale-wise using a 50cal on a human would be pretty devastating. If you saw your buddy blown open that bad, you'd probably be more like to run.

I am not saying this is the best in todays modern world , but I have used the Lee Enfield 303 for sniping ,the scope being an old german needle one , and i found it to do the job admirably up to 1000 yards , i then went on to the 7.62 with floating barrel which was good , but i still prefered the 303 . circa 1970 .

Anti-material with definite anti-personnel capabilities.

PSG-1 is more accurate (still the most accurate off-the-shelf semi-auto SR in the world). But MSG-90 is a lot cheaper, which is why most PDs who can even afford that go with it.

Clearly, we all have our favorites. As a child in JROTC, it was 513T and the 40X on rifle team, then I was "Brought up" in the military on the M-14. So that made me a fairly easy sell on the AR-10.

But if you wanted to sell me on something else, something "better", move me along the line as it would be, ..................

......................... what rifle would that be?

Now, I have said that I'm not a sniper only an excellent shot. I need my glasses to shoot but I do shoot standing, without a brace, using just a combat sling and iron sights. I don't think I've ever used a scope. At any rate, probably don't have the eyes to be a sniper, probably too many degrees to be a sniper, ie, more of the leader/manager type (but I do love being out of the office on drills!). As far as the personalty, about being able to kill someone who is not an immediate threat to oneself, well often maintained that if I had license, I could do it, but still.....

At any rate, all those factors in mind, with what I've said previous, what's next?
