If you want to read a possible (fictional) account of what could happen, then check out the Bear and the Dragon by Tom Clancy.

No, it's not a good scenario. B&D is so full of holes that it belonged to the trash heap. In his 1st books, Clancy really did his research, including the works of General Sir John Hackett's World War III, probably the best book ever written about that subject.

Tom Clancey doesn't even write the books anymore, he just puts his names on it and collects money.

The Bear and the Dragon he did write. Its the series he doesn't write, like Op-Center, or Net Force. But the stand alone novels, the non-fiction stuff, as well as the books involving Jack Ryan, John Clark and Domingo Chavez, he does write.

Russia would annihilate the Chinese Army. The Chinese have numbers but the Russians have the ultimate weapon, their winter.

when I was younger, I really liked Bear + Dragon, now I see how it is little more than a joke. some things hold, but PLA/PLAN/PLAF better in others. egz. the sub sinking part, air battles, bridge bombing so easy, ah64 raping armor (they'd prob get raped [case study Iraq 2 + PLA much stronger than Iraqi]), ballistic missile launch intercept, etc. etc.
Clancy seems a lot more like Clive Cussler recently

It might be quite bitter to admit but in terms of aviation Russian advantage is not that overwhelming over PLA air force.... moreover if we consider where the trend goes Russian government had to order Russian corporations to strip warplanes sold to China of the most advanced avionics and engines.

I remember one Russian aviation general admited in 1997 that there out of around 2,000 combat and combat support aircrats, only 600 are operational withouth any repairs, another 800 can be made operational after some repair and remaining most probably be scrapped if not take care of in near years (it was in 1997). Around 500 of the combat planes are from 3rd generation and need to be sold out....

He also told that average flight hours a russian pilot has in a year was 40, but if you take out hours of strategic bombers and cargo planes, then what is left is really small.....

I think it is not possible to get reliable information about actual size of Russian Air Force. It is state secret. Secret not from enemy but from Russian people so that they don't panic much...

I wouldn't say that. They still suffer from severe institutional backwardness. Alot of their officers are still uncomfortable with digitized warfare and refusing to shift both authority and responsibility downwards. The smallest independent unit remains the regiment while the West has gone down to the company level.

As far as the PLA is concerned, the AF and Navy is the Army's combat support.

The navy's job is to get the army across and the AF's job is to keep bad guy's birds off the army's back. Like I said, the navy and AF ALWAYS play a sub-ordinate role to the army.

A lot of people interpret what would happen if either one were to get into a war with one another. There would be no war becuase they are somewhat allies. Both countries would pretty much be screwed over. I would guess India would get involved in some sort of way. Definetly the U.S. cause we love to get involved with the community
